Some excitement up north late Saturday night/early Sunday: The CHP started chasing a car southbound on 101 through Petaluma around 1:30 a.m. because they believed that three armed suspects in the car were involved in a home invasion robbery in Sonoma County. The car continued at high speeds into San Rafael, where police laid a spike strip across the freeway, severely damaging and deflating one of the Mercury Mountaineer's front tires.

The car sped on, exiting the freeway in San Rafael and eventually getting up to 70 mph driving on a rotor and partial rim all the way across the Richmond Bridge. We didn't even know you could do that!

The SUV finally came to a stop in Point Richmond, at which point the front of the car burst into flames. Petaluma and Richmond police then arrested the three suspects.

We expect that some piece of this thrilling chase, or a re-enactment, will appear on COPS (or similar) in the near future.
