King Neptune, the young adult sea lion we checked in with yesterday, was put down by vets at the Marina Mammal Center last night. The poor fella was suffering from a bad case of pneumonia after an infection in his gunshot wounds spread to his chest, forcing his caretakers to take euthanize the innocent marine mammal.
On a lighter note: down in East Palo Alto, volunteer Marine Mammal Center workers had better luck rescuing a young sea lion pup who had become stuck in a muddy creek bed near Verbena Drive. When getting the animal unstuck proved to be too difficult for the volunteers, MMC volunteers got a little help from a local towing company who helped pluck the pinniped from the quagmire. The young pup, now named Verbena, has checked in to the Sausalito rehab facility to get its strength back.
