This Friday, locally-renowned DIY-recording legend John Vanderslice will share the stage at the Herbst Theater with a full 30-piece arrangement from San Francisco's Magik*Magik Orchestra. Although Vanderslice made his name by polishing a discography pop-rock gems in his Mission District analog recording studio, Tiny Telephone, his latest album White Wilderness expanded his sound to include Magik*Magik's full orchestra and choir. This Friday's show is a one-night-only event and the only chance to catch a live version of this new direction for a well-respected local musician.

For the uninitiated, John Vanderslice's work as a singer-songwriter spans nine full-length albums over the past 11 years. As a producer, Vanderslice can count modern classics like Spoon's Gimme Fiction and The Mountain Goats' We All Shall be Healed among his achievements. Lovingly known around the Bay Area as the nicest guy in indie rock, Vanderslice once served this SFist editor a beer during a NoisePop Festival appearance by the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle.

In Magik*Magik Orchestra's three years of existence, Artistic Director Minna Choi has made a name for the group with some high-profile collaborations with locally and internationally recognized artists. The group previously performed alongside local folk duo The Dodos for a special performance of the band's album Fools at Palace of Fine Arts. They've also performed work by Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood and appeared on Death Cab for Cutie's latest record. Our friends over at local music site TheBayBridged.com, who are also producing the event, caught up with Choi last week to discuss the origin and evolution of the group.

As of this writing, tickets to Friday's show are still available for a reasonable $20 a pop for orchestra level seats, or $55 for reserved box seats. Save yourself some Ticketmaster fees by dropping by the Herbst Box Office on Van Ness.
