Returning to San Francisco after a 14 year absence, Rye's Rhachel Shaw spent time in Los Angeles working at Barkeeper in Silverlake, Malo Cantina on Sunset Boulevard, and Caña Rum in Downtown L.A. So, you know, she knows her stuff. And, seeing as how SFist errs on the side of silver linings, we're sure glad she moved back to the Bay Area before Elizabeth Taylor's death. See, Shaw came up with a fittingly boozy yet divine tribute called White Diamonds.
"The drink specials on the board have been somewhat topical lately (example: Marco Dionycsis' Charlie Sheen inspired Tiger Blood cocktail). So when I heard of lovely Liz's passing, I thought a drink inspired by her famous odor was appropriate," Shaw explained to SFist.
She goes on to say that, though somewhat akin to Neyah's White Manhattan at Nopa, White Diamonds is basically a new take on a white manhattan. "They are different drinks but they are very similar."
In memoriam, we plowed through four of them on the eve of Taylor's death. So will you.
White Diamonds
1 1/2 oz. white whiskey (she uses Koval Rye Chicago)
3/4 oz. Cocchi Americano
1/2 oz. Marachino liquer
1 dash Bitterman's grapefruit bitters
Stir with ice. Serve up. Garnish with grapefruit peel.
