The Examiner's Will Reisman investigates some excessive charges handed to Clipper Card users last month when they tried to reload their one-card-to-rule-them-all bus passes. One man who tried to deposit $100 on his card at the new temporary Transbay Center had an extra $300 taken from his account after an add-value machine botched the transaction three times in a row. All in all, 150 people were overcharged for a total of $14,650 during a glitch that lasted from February 7-11th.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission still doesn't known what caused the problem that affected 15 out of the system's 55 total add value machines, but apparently they weren't communicating with the home base properly. All those affected have since been reimbursed, but as Muni expert witness Greg Dewar noted to the Examiner: we hope no one was dinged with overdraft charges as a result. So, be sure to check the math of those add value machines and watch your bank statements, folks.
