Previously we saw how controversy over accuracy and health concerns surrounding PG&E's new SmartMeters flared up in the North Bay and then fizzled a bit in the Marina, but the latest update on the power company's push for the installation of wireless SmartMeters comes from the avenues where neighbors are politely turning down the upgrades. The scene from the Inner Richmond by way of RichmondSFBlog:

[RichmondSF reader] Clark, who lives on 2nd Avenue near Clement, says he chose to decline installation today “based on the lack of notice and information about these smart meters.” When he did, the Wellington Energy contractor “just nodded his head” and moved on, Clark reported. Another neighbor on his block also declined installation.

Rather than trying to block installation by chaining themselves to the old meters bothering the PG&E-contracted Wellington Energy workers tasked with installing the meters, several advocates from stopsmartmeters.org were out in the neighborhood to hand out flyers detailing their stance on the devices, making it a point to stay one house ahead of the installer. Even a run-in with the police sounds tame: an officer simply asked one of the protestors to "back off a bit." How civil!
