Tian Sheng Yu, 59, was badly beaten on Friday right near the Fox Theater, in broad daylight, on the 1800 block of Telegraph Avenue. There was no apparent motive for the attack, and Yu's 27-year-old son, Jin Cheng Yu, was with his father and was also attacked by two 18-year-old Oakland residents, Lavonte Drummer and Dominic Davis. Drummer and Davis were arrested on Monday after Drummer turned himself in to police.

Today, Oakland police announced that the elder Yu has died in the hospital.

"There's no room in a civilized society for this maddening assault on human beings," said Mayor Ron Dellums in a press conference today. Drummer and Davis are set to appear in Alameda County court on Wednesday, now facing homicide charges. [SF Examiner]
