Plenty of reasons to venture out into the rain this week with San Francisco garage-pop act The Mantles and Sonny & The Sunsets at Cafe Du Nord tonight, Austin's White Denim at The Independent Wednesday, local all-girl post-punk trio Grass Widow at Thee Parkside Friday and Oakland's electro-punk solo act Hawney Troof with epicsauce favorites Boyz IV Men and more at Amnesia Saturday.
At the risk of being pegged for a bit of psychedelic garage-rock bias, our pick for this week is the notoriously entertaining Black Lips at the Great American Music Hall Thursday. In a similar fashion to last week's featured band Thee Oh Sees, the Atlanta quartet draws heavily from that mid-60s distortion heavy and dance friendly sound that refuses to die, adding a distinctly southern and punk flavor to the ongoing garage revival. And while the group has reportedly toned down the onstage antics that they have perhaps been best known for, their raucous and energetic shows have never been known to disappoint. Be sure to get there early for local opener Nobunny -- while the whole masked thing may be a bit gimmicky, his blend of bubblegum pop is well worth a listen, and the live show is known to be a real crowd-pleaser.
