Ah, yes, this is what we like: people apologizing for football games. So scary and confusing and lacking climactic eleventh-hour numbers, they are. What are we talking about? Well, actually, it seems Sandy Barbour, Berkeley’s Director of Athletics, sent out a letter, dolling out a huge mea culpa for Saturday's big homecoming game against (the vile) USC. Crowd control was lacking, rendering the game an uncomfortable one for fans.

Barbour writes:

Dear Cal Football Fans:

During Saturday's Cal football game against USC, we know that many of you who attended had an unfortunate and unexpected gameday experience due to the long lines and congestion throughout much of Memorial Stadium. I want to apologize and, at the same time, make sure we move quickly to understand exactly what went wrong and let you know about the steps being taken to address it.

And:

An immediate review after the game found that almost half the crowd entered the stadium through just two gates - Gates 1 and 2 - near the north side of the stadium. The resulting bottleneck caused lines to back up, especially on the concourse level. Similar problems occurred in other areas of the stadium, as well.

Kudos to you, Barbour, for taking responsibility, and in such a very public way. You should think about running San Francisco.(Although we have to point out: crowd issues, like the one that stymied Saturday's game, wouldn't happen during, say, an all-star concert production of A Little Night Music. Something to think about.) But who, pray tell, is going to apologize for all of the trampstamps that littered downtown San Francisco over the weekend? Really, UCS ilk were everywhere, spray tans and all.

Oh, and Cal lost to USC. Big time.
