Okay, first up -- what's the latest with Gavin Newsom's stalker, Mr. Purple Gloves? Well, persistent reporters at the Chronicle managed to get Han Shin on the phone last night, where they had a conversation that the reporter tactfully described as "rambling." In that conversation, Shin admitted he's off his medication and said that he wears purple latex gloves because "purple is a sign of divinity and royalty." However, he denied that those were his purple latex gloves found in his impounded car the other day, and said that the police had planted them there.
In other possibly mentally-unstable local Asian-American news, Kenneth Eng, the Asianweek columnist who hates African-Americans, has gotten his paper in a world of hurt. Editor-at-large Ted Fang (yes, of the influential Fang family) has issued an apology, calling the column "unfortunate" and saying it shouldn't have been published -- though he also would not say if he personally approved the piece. Asianweek will also be participating in a forum with the Willie Brown Institute, presumably about racial tolerance, on Friday.
Jon Carroll weighs in as well, but his main point is that it can't be true that Asian-Americans and African-Americans don't get along because of Tiger Woods. Oh, right, because mixed-race children always signify amity between the entire racial groups of their parents! Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom has a rare moment of agreement with the Board of Supervisors, where they all release statements condemning the column. Bloggers also agree -- check out SFMike's take on it (with pictures of the actual article!), and Asian-American magazine Hyphen's post about it, from a horrified former Asianweek writer and editor.
And finally, a reader passed along this link to an interview with Kenneth Eng she found online (complete with picture, at your right), where, among other things, he describes his love for his stuffed animals. Thanks, reader!
