While the chief issue is that Animal feces make up nearly 4 percent of residential waste (and think about it: that's just from the people who actually bother to pick it up) in a city that vows to keep every bit of trash out of landfills by 2020, a clever by-product of the recycling effort might be to scoop the poo into "a methane digester, a device that uses bugs and micro-organisms to consume the material and emit methane, which would be trapped and burned to power a turbine to make electricity or to heat homes."
SFist Franny has already volunteered to help with the eventual need to recycle cat crap by doing a little "recycling" of her own, if you get our drift and we think you do. Norcal spokespeople, however seem open to eventually expanding this program to include other domestic animal waste products -- sorry Fran!
