So what's a fat tire to do in the Bay Area for a little wet-weather action? You could brave the conditions and hit the trails anyway, or you could look for some lower-impact activities.

. Not literally of course--that would hurt, but there are thousands of miles of paved roads blanketing the greater Bay Area that offer great riding and training opportunities, even for the most hardcore trail riders. Fantastic scenic bikepaths in Mill Valley, Half Moon Bay, Mountain View, and San Jose; leg-burning climbs up Mt. Tamalpais, Wildcat Canyon, and Mt. Hamilton; and flat-out bombing straight-aways like Canada Road and Highway 1 south of Pescadero. Riding pavement during the muddy months also saves considerable wear and tear on your expensive components.
