To get our cheese fix, there are a few places to go to: the Cheese Board in Berkeley deserves a few posts of its own, there are a few neighborhood cheese shops in San Francisco (the 24th street Cheese Company in San Francisco, the Cheese Boutique in the sunset or in Glen Park, Say Cheese in Cole Valley, etc.) and there is the Cow Girl Creamery in the Ferry Building.
We mention the Cow Girl Creamery for several reasons: one is that it is a local cheese maker which makes more-than-decent attempts at recreating French idiosyncracies like fromage blanc or crème fraîche. But the reason we are interested in today, is that the Creamery includes in its cheese library the Tome de Jose. The tome de José is described as having a pale yellow pate and a salty, sweet, and nutty flavor. The first time we saw this cheese was while we were having dinner at Farallon, an event we already milked once before.
