Stephen Tobolowsky is the ultimate "Hey! It's That Guy!". He's been in more than a hundred movies and on dozens of television shows but until you see him you probably think you don't know him. That semi-anonomity allows him to make a good living as a constantly employed character actor.

What it also seems to make him is an apt and engaging storyteller. The film is just him telling stories over the course of a day - his birthday - starting with a walk on the beach and ending with a rapt audience of Hollywood friends (some of which you recognize). The stories are, mostly, funny and poigniant though in some cases a bit long. What you come away from the film feeling is, really, that Stephen is a lovely man and when can you have him over for dinner?

The director, Robert Brinkman, probably had more of a challenge in editing the stories than he did in capturing them in the first place. But he does a decent job of keeping it all moving through the day. Some of the interspersed interviews with Stephen's family and friends are kind of jarring and don't really add anything to the film but do serve as a decent break from just staring at Stephen non-stop.

You have one more chance to see Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party at Cinequest on Friday at 5pm.
