Shortly after the terrible tsunami in the Indian Ocean, SFist Mary-Lynn put together a great SFist Cares feature. But as the extent of suffering has begun to become fully apparent, we felt that we weren't necessarily doing enough. The scale of this tragedy will probably not be matched in our lifetimes. At least we sure hope not.

Of course, we're not George Bush, so we don't have $10,000, or two weeks presidential pay, to offer the victims. What we do have is twenty or fifty bucks that would otherwise be spent on a nice dinner or a night out drinking. Instead, we're going to send it to a pet charity such as Medecins Sans Frontieres, Red Cross Red Crescent or American Friends. We would love suggestions as to other worthy organizations out there. We'd also like to point you to some blogs that are bringing news and analysis from home and on the scene: Chiens Sans Frontieres at DesiMediaBitch, Kiruba Shankar's blog from Chennai, Amit Varna's India Uncut , or Benjamin Rosenbaum who has a comparitive ratings and notes on a number of the other charities.

We have no doubt that the American people will give more as individuals than the American government when it's all said and done. We only wish we could help more.
