Wired's Editor-In-Chief Scott Dadich is quite literally cleaning house.

Under Dadich, who's been at the helm of the trend-setting Condé Nast magazine since 2012, the publication has seen six National Magazine Award nominations, five Webby Awards, and 12 Society of Publication Designers medals. But display those awards on a disorganized desk at Wired's spiffy new San Francisco offices and Dadich might be inclined to throw them away. As he puts it, the operation isn't a rag-tag "pirate ship" anymore.

The offices look great, they really do, and Dadich has been Instagramming them like a new puppy. But I sort of get the feeling that he's a bit too in love with the immaculate. It's not news that Dadich loves objects and cleanliness — he admits in the leaked memo below that he's a bit of an OCD freak. As the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "When Wired magazine Editor in Chief Scott Dadich drinks Scotch, he has it out of tumblers with hand-painted 24-carat gold inlay images of spacecraft and fighter jets from the '70s." And if he offers you one, you'd better use a coaster — preferably one to match.

The internal memo obtained by The AWL made the rounds on media Twitter this morning, where obscenely messy journalists quipped:

Here it is!

WIRED Ones:

I need a few minutes of your attention to talk about how we treat the workspace we’ll fully occupy on Jan. 5.

We made a big investment in the construction and design of the new floor — more than $3 million over 10 years — to create a home worthy of our ambitions and a place that’s fun to come to in the morning. There are zones to work together, and quiet spots for focused work. There are drawers for personal items, and tons of storage for our materials and technologies. I believe the new 3rd floor will give us every opportunity to do what we do best, which is create content that’s a source of surprise and delight to more than 45 million community members.

It’s an embarrassment: coffee stains on walls (and countertops and desks), overflowing compost bins, abandoned drafts of stories and layouts (full of highly confidential content), day-old, half-eaten food, and, yes, I’m going to say it, action figures. Please. WIRED is no longer a pirate ship. It’s the home of world-changing journalism. It’s the West Coast home of Condé Nast. And it’s increasingly a place where we, and our New York colleagues and owners, host artists, founders, CEOs, and advertisers.

We all treasure our photos of loved ones. Mementos of personal accomplishment. I encourage you to proudly display a few small items at your desk because our workspace reflects who we are. It reflects our values. But how we treat our workplace is a manifestation of how seriously we take our work. When we stop caring for our shared spaces, we demonstrate a lack of respect for the space and for each other. When you leave stains on countertops, it’s disgusting for your colleagues and embarrassing for visitors.

When we take occupancy of the full floor, we’ll walk through the specifics. I think you’ll be delighted to see that we’ve engineered spaces that are designed to get messy, entire rooms for the implements of creative inspiration and expression. The common newsroom and community spaces are not those places.

We’re going to see a significant uptick in office visitors next year. Please make every effort to protect the sensitive information you are working on. Do not leave content of any sort on your desk at the end of the day. We have flat files, vertical files, and locking cabinets spread across the entire floor. Please use them. Secure your work.

Every day, publicists send us all a lot of promotional, er, uh … crap: books, tchotchkes, sales mailers. If there are DVDs or books you need to do your job, please do make use of them. But make sure the items you don’t need make their way off of horizontal surfaces and into the appropriate recycling or refuse containers at the end of the day, or simply take them home.

But make sure the items you don’t need make their way off of horizontal surfaces and into the appropriate recycling or refuse containers at the end of the day, or simply take them home.

We went to great expense to purchase elevated laptop stands and monitor arms for all desks. Please do customize the setup to optimize your workspace. I want you to be comfortable and productive — we work long hours — but know that the elevated platform is for your laptop, not your phone.

Clean your dishes, and please remove the food from your dishes from the sink. Among many things, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner is infamous for walking through the office handing out demerits and tongue lashings to people with messy desks strewn with half-eaten food, towers of music, and stacks of assorted crap. Martha Stewart once issued edicts about the three types of approved writing instruments allowed at the Omnimedia studios. I’m not going to do any of that — although my OCD can sometimes get the best of me — because I’m confident you’ll understand exactly what I’m saying here and clean it up, not just for me but for all of us.

Thank you,

Scott

Maybe we aren't doing enough to consider the possibility that Wired's offices have become a human cesspool. After all, journalists are filthy monsters who should all work from home.

See how much better the office looks without people?

According to the Daily Kos, someone in the Clinton campaign took Obama's image from this video and darkened (a la OJ Simpson gracing the covers of Time and Newsweek) for this commercial.
In case you needed yet another reason to despise Hillary Clinton and her vermin strategists, she's now running an ad blatantly lying about Obama's subcommittee. Her ad includes debate footage heavily doctored to make Obama blacker.

So to sum things up, politics is still a dirty game but you should act surprised with self-righteous indignation whenever this point rears its ugly head. Today, in case you're living under a rock (or have a life) is Steve Jobs keynote speech, and he just announced the holy presence of the new MacBook Air, "the world’s thinnest notebook." What, no iUnicorn? We have been hoping to see for quite some time. Maybe next year.

We'll quote from Luscious Garage's Web site to give you the premise:

Imagine a garage with the qualities of your hybrid: one that’s intelligent, cutting-edge, and environmentally responsible. Then make it luscious: a beautiful facility, woman-owned and operated, conveniently located in downtown San Francisco. Introducing Luscious Garage.
We pay equal attention to you, your car, and the environment.

Owner Carolyn Coquillette, in the Wired piece, says, "there's a critical mass of hybrids in the Bay Area, enough to support a shop like this," and we believe it, even though we don't know anything about cars (being non-mechanical and pedestrians to boot). However, we sometimes know funny when we see it, and we thought this quote of Carolyn's from her blog was priceless:

Half of those miles were spent cruising the streets of SOMA, trying to go as slowly as possible without eliciting honks. (I find that it’s easy to pass as well-meaning but distracted in a Prius)

A good sense of humor, a commitment to the environment, and an idea that can help others with the same. Sounds like a decent formula for success.

Unlike mere mortals who don't have the clout or funds to access such items, the modern music diva gets her very own reacTable with which to "wow audiences" while on tour this summer, according to Wired.com. SFist Leanne saw it in action herself, at Shoreline, back in May.

At first glance, we thought this was an article about a cool new toy for kids. Light-up blocks that make sound when moved? Awesome! But, no.

The idea of non-instrumental tactile objects and mechanisms being used to create or control electronic sounds, sound art, and even electronic music is hardly new. And the noise it makes seems rather retro-Laurie Anderson to us. We guess this lighted table and nifty cubes and cylinders might be as cool as local artist Pamela Z's BodySynth, if she would also light herself up from the inside with neon when she played it. Microsoft is also riding on the touch-table bandwagon. No need to mention what Mac has done with similar technology lately.

Sadly, we know that despite the reacTable's pretty-pretty visual revolution in audio technology, we will still be subjected on future occasions to sound-art performances where "musicians" break analog speakers apart onstage for the reverb fun of it, hammer pots with microphones, or sit placidly while twiddling knobs on a control panel.

"The Lawrence Livermore lab, outside of San Francisco, already has a pretty iffy security record -- barely-armed guards, affairs with Chinese agents, lost master keys, the works. So what is management doing to boost its security credentials? Just what you'd expect: Partnering with Texas A&M, the school recently slapped down by the feds for accidentally infecting its workers with bioweapons (and then covering it up). What could possibly go wrong?"

Seems half of what's broadcast these days is in regard to "National Security" and "Homeland Security." This truly seems a case of "physician, heal thyself." Is anyone in the guvmint paying attention?
