(For all of you book-reading intelligentsia who claim to have TV sets only so that your can watch your Netflix DVDs of The Sopranos and The Wire, you can read more about the strike here.)

While not necessarily Bay Area-related, this deeply affects all of us who look at awards season at something holy and critical - an all-star Ramadan with awards, if you will. While the cancellation is still in the rumor stages, it appears that in lieu of the normal four-plus hour Golden Globe Awards marathon, we could see a scaled back version of the awards, which would consist of "the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handing out Golden Globes to the winners, who will then pick up the awards and pass through a press room for photos and interviews."

That sounds like a phenomenal idea. Why did it take a strike of Hollywood writers to come up with an awards show as brilliant and concise as this? That said, we can't imagine that the Oscar's bastard child of an award show will, in fact, be canceled for something so streamlined and pleasant for the viewer. Hmm. Let's wait and see.
According to a sister over at Variety, in it Bonds is "painted in 'Game of Shadows' as a gifted player who made a Faustian bargain to increase his power." (Might we suggest Damn Giants as a working title, then?)

Ron Shelton -- auteur of such testosterone-enriched films as Bull Durham, Tin Cup, Ty Cobb biopic Cobb, and White Men Can't Jump -- is tapped to direct the film once the WGA strike ends.

We hope that this picture ends up more about the man that is Barry Bonds, not about the heroic reporters who broke the story. We don't want to have to sit through another one of these. And no word yet on who will play Bonds. Any suggestions?

Critics Corner: WGA Strike PSAs

It's not fair that our sister, LAist, gets all of the great writers strike coverage.
It's not fair that our sister, LAist, gets all of the great writers strike coverage. Alas. But the Bay Area's own Sean Penn has joined the noble striking effort. He helped to create the above Writers Guild of America-conceived video for "Project Speechless," videos that feature A-list thespionic talent. What's more, they found a way of making Mr. Penn funny. (We kid, Sean. Please don't hit us. Not that you'll have the chance.)

Anyway, this campaign doesn't seem too effective. People will either find it funny (internalizing the message that actors can be entertaining without dialogue), or they will find it boring (and won't internalize anything because they don't care.) We think it's sorta funny, but akin to seeing protesters with duct tape around their mouths signifying censorship. In an attempt to jar to viewer, the whole concept collapses on its righteous self.

A better campaign might have been Sean Penn recreating Jeff Spicoli and maybe uttering the line "All I need are some tasty waves, a cool... something or other, and I'm... I have no idea." Or something like that. That said, we wish the strikers all the best and quick return to writing. (Also, will Marlee Matlin or other lip-readers out there please let us know what Sean is saying? For the life of us, we can't make it out.)

Day Around the Bay

-- The WGA strike suuuuuucks.
