A tree decided to end things once and for all as it fell at Divisadero and Page Streets, taking out a few Munilines with it.

Obviously traffic was closed in both directions in the immediate aftermath, but crews have been sawing the tree apart and according to one report traffic is open in both directions in one lane.

Aside from the Muni lines, there were no reports of damage, but plenty of photo ops for passerbys:

by Lisa Hix

Like many people, Cari Zinter is looking for a place, a nice flat in the East Bay — except she would prefer that flat to be a platform in a tree. And she's willing to pay rent for a good solid oak in a backyard.

She'd been riding her bike across the country and decided she would like to build her own permanent residence in Oakland. In the name of finding "alternative ways of using space to live," her home among the birds would be rather simple — built on a 10-by-10 platform, with a wash basin for laundry and bathing, and a system for collecting rain water and using her urine for compost. In the future, she would even consider installing solar panels for electricity and a zip line to bring her bike up and down. She says she's hoping to inspire a new way of living, maybe even a whole community of people living in treehouses.

But perhaps Zinter, originally from Ohio, is unaware of how unpopular tree-sitters have become after a dozen or so poo-flinging activists — including our favorite Dumpster Muffin — spent 21 months altogether sleeping in the oak grove in front of UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium. Failing to prevent the university from chopping down the trees to erect a athletic training center, the last four were neatly plucked out of their perches on September 9 when construction workers built a scaffolding for the Berkeley cops to reach them.

Berkeley Tree-Sitters Sentenced

Three of the privileged youths who protested <a href="h...

SF News

berkeley

crime

oak

oak grove

protest

tree

ucb

Brock Keeling

Three of the privileged youths who protested the removal of the Berkeley oak grove were sentenced in Berkeley on Monday. A state appeals court gave UCB the go-ahead to put up the sports training center next to Memorial Stadium, effectively hammering the final nail in the Save the Oaks coffin. This is yet another ruling in favor of hacking down the old oaks, and a win for "more than 400 student athletes who will now have the safe and suitable facilities they deserve," according to Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour. Ouch. Is this your car? Our condolences. Yesterday's breezy breezes by DPark seem to have dislodged a branch directly into your rear window. If you need more photos for insurance, let us know -- we've got a bunch. In the mean time, everyone else can busy themselves with feeling smug for not owning this car.

Oh, and you're probably wondering who that guy is.

As we were photographing this epic scene, a Guatemalan walked past and insisted -- gesturally -- that we take his picture amidst the carnage. All he could say in English was "David" and "Guatemalan," and he enthusiastically posed next to the vehicle looking tough. Er ... okay. Then we shrugged at each other for about 5 minutes because neither of us could figure out how to communicate with each other. So anyway, here's David, ladies and gentlemen.

Woman Crushed by Falling Tree at Stern Grove

Well, this is some sad news.

SF News

falling

Stern Grove

tree

Brock Keeling

Well, this is some sad news.

The federal lawsuit, according to the Examiner, was brought against the local retail mammoth in U.S. District Court in Syracuse, N.Y. The company, simply titled Car-Freshener Corporation of Watertown, claims that "the design on the T-shirts is identical to their trademarked design, which is used by the company on car air fresheners, apparel and other items."

The company is looking to bar Old Navy from buying, selling, and advertising its tree-designed items.

That said, here are some Old Navy locations in the Bay Area.
