That's just plain commonsense.

But in the first grade? Crazy! And that's just what happened at Cleveland Elementary School in the Excelsior District on Monday. According to the playground rumor mill, the kid was packing heat in his backpack. Turns out the gossip was true. School district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe clains that "the student said he thought it was a fake gun."

While now on suspension, the wee one was released to his parents, not expelled (yet), and no charges were filed against him or his parents. But the case, according to the Gate, has been "referred to the county's Child Protective Services."

This incident comes on the heels of Thursday's arrest of a 17-year-old boy who (allegedly) brought in a loaded semiautomatic gun to night classes at Lowell High School. Oh yeah, and the Gate goes on to report that "28 percent believe it is sometimes or always acceptable to bring a gun to school." Scary.

SFist Blotter

Via.

SF News

berkeley

crime

geary

guns

japantown

killing

murder

potrero hill

shooting

student

Brock Keeling

Hey, did you know that most gunfire in SF (and everywhere else, we assume) goes unreported? It does. At least according to the Examiner, it doesn't. They report that ShotSpotter--that magic recording device that can pinpoint the locations of discharged gunfire in San Francisco's most at-risk neighborhoods--hears gunfire that city residents should be reporting.

Two men were shot and killed in SF on Saturday night. First, just outside the Japan center in Japantown at around 10:15 p.m., 32-year-old Oakland resident "Ajason Black" was shot and killed on Geary Boulevard.

Then, a few minutes later over in Potrero Hill, Victor Carson, 41, collided with gunfire over on the 1000 block of Connecticut Street. Carson, it seems, died from a gunshot wound right to the neck.

It goes without saying: no arrests have been made in either case yet.

It seems that they're hot and bothered over the UC Regents for a myriad of reasons, but mainly because of "fee hikes, the use of the SAT exam in student admissions, UC management of nuclear-weapons laboratories, and what they called the university's lack of diversity." Also, members of the UC Regent clan are appointed by the governor, not via election. Boo.

What's more, these kids mean business. They're chaining themselves to areas around the building using bike locks around their necks, which sounds pretty dangerous. (Be careful -- especially you there at left.) The Gate reports that four people were still shackled to the doors, at least as of 9:30 a.m. Three of them are students and the fourth, it seems, is a "former student who said he had dropped out as a protest of UC policies." While we would like to call bullshit on the fourth student, we can't. Hate for the Regents runs pretty deep with most UC students.

Failed Suicide Attempt at UC Hastings

Today, a little before noon, a suicide attempt occurred at Hastings Law School. We received the information via our Contribute section (which, by all means, do) and from Introducing Ashley. (Aw) She reports that a "female student had attempted to jump from the 21st floor. Luckily, her friends and local police were able to talk her back inside."

What's more, she goes on to say in her blog that "[i]t is amazing to me how much death there is at UC Hastings. We seem to be averaging one suicide a term." Really? Why are UC Hastings law students trying to off themselves at such a (seemingly) high rate? Hey, most of us wanted to get into Boalt, but that doesn't mean that things won't get better. Chin up, UCH.
