In case you missed The Daily Show last night-- not that any member of the self-respecting Bay Area intelligentsia would dare to admit missing a second of sparkling political satire -- check out Berkeley and its Marine corps nonsense getting skewered last night care of Jon Stewart's clan. It's chock full of funny. (Except the overt and cruel hippie-hating part, which we find not only a played out but a bit dangerous; there's nothing wrong with being a hippie, people.) Be sure to check it out.

Heartiness plunged to its death from the Golden Gate Bridge. The entree, sadly, is dead. At least according Kim Severson of the New York Times it is, and we couldn't be more delighted. The article interviews chef Tom Colicchio who says, "I think the entree has been in trouble for a long time...[e]ating an entree is too many bites of one thing, and it’s boring."

Love it. So modern. So California. So eating-disorder.

To help you rid yourselves of that table centerpiece of mutton or leg of lamb, here's a nifty and somewhat insane hors d'oeuvres for you and your guests. It's found in Martha Stewart's Entertaining -- the tome responsible for her popularity, continued abuse of the term "oriental," and overall maniacal genius -- so you know it's perfect for all of you obsessive compulsives out there. Described as a "wisp of taste," these stuffed snow peas will compliment any holiday party or party for one. They lack heavy carbs and breadiness of your typical tiny ham quiches. Plus, your guests will think you're mentally unfit after blanching, slicing open, stuffing, and sprig-adorning a bunch of tiny snow peas. "These are amazing! Wow. So is everything alright with you these days?" they'll say.

The recipe, unapproved by the Chez Panisse mafia, after the jump.

Hey, a local 12 year old from Foster City just won the world chess championship for the boys 12 and under age bracket. Champ Daniel Naroditsky won 9 games, lost 1, and played to a draw with the previous number 1 ranked preteen male. The Chron was unable to talk to him because of the time difference in Turkey (where the championships were held), but Daniel's proud father reports that Daniel's first question after winning was "do I have to go to school on Friday?"

Daniel's been playing chess since he was six, and plays a couple times a week at the chess club in the SF Mechanics' Institute. But Glass also recycles We’re tenting tonight, a song of the era, to intense dramatic effect. Even more dramatic is the Marching Song of the 1st of Arkansas. It is the anthem of a black Union regiment, sung in its original melody with Glass’ arrangement to it. This is the climax of the opera, as the military victory and the dreams of black emancipation coalesce here, only to go their separate ways in the second Act.

Now that's an interesting topic of discussion, that being the worst Giants loss of the season. They debated the same thing, sort of, on McCovey Chronicles but we can't remember what led to it. Frankly, Monday night's game was rough, but not that rough, primarily because the Giants are so out of it that at this point, it meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. And out of all the blown saves the Giants have this season, isn't a blown save kind of something that fits into the realm as always a possibility? Oh, how quick we are to forget the big blown game of the season, Armando Benitez's two-balk extravaganza. Sure, it's not like giving up a three run homer with two outs in the ninth, but losing a game in the twelfth inning by balking in the winning run? Now that's losing in style.

Mark Ellis, Mike Piazza, and Shannon Stewart each wielded big bats to get the win for the A's as some guy named Ruddy Lugo got the win.
Gays of the Golden State: rejoice! For a few moments! State legislators approved "gender-neutral marriage" for the second time. And for the second time it bites its nails, waiting for Governor Schwarzenegger to beat it to death. Doing his hair and makeup for T3? Have at it. Letting them get married? Nope.It seems that homosexual love is not nearly as real as heterosexual love. Above all else, that's pretty much the message he wants sent.

What's more, hell-bound/horrible human being Benjamin Lopez of the Traditional Values Coalition tells the Chronicle, "We see AB43 as yet another heavy-handed, blatant attempt for Mark Leno and company to skirt the current restrictions in law that prevents same-sex marriages in California," going on to say, "Sieg Heil!"

Sorry, Mark and company . Better luck next time.

The singers did not present a full fledged opera, as in the previous concerts this summer, but selected arias to display what they can do best. The staging was minimal, and the costumes were black tie attire, but felt like what a formal 50 year high-school reunion in Texas would wear: expensive, full of satin, but bland, bland, bland.

To explain what was at stake: last year, Heidi Melton and Noah Stewart gave superlative performances, and were later invited into the prestigious ranks of the Adler fellows, and voila, they were both singing in the cast of the Rosenkavalier on arguably the second best opera stage in the country a couple months back. While all singers on Saturday were amazing, many in the audience were trying to figure out who was going to “make it,” who was going to be the next Thomas Hampson or the next Patricia Racette.
