UPDATE: Paul David Addis' Grace Cathedral Arson Attempt Snuffed Out

Burning down the birthplace of the holy union between Courteney Cox to David Arquette? Dear God, no.

Last night a little before midnight, Paul David Addis was arrested outside of Grace Cathedral, suspected of trying to burn down the historic church down. It seems that his neighbor called the police last night after overhearing him say something to the effect of "the cathedral wasn’t going to be there anymore." Yikes.

Luckily, an officer found him walking on California Street near the cathedral, with a backpack full of "fireworks inside...and other things" leading SFPD officer Jim McGrath to believe that he was up to no good. He was booked and thrown into the county clink this morning, according tho Bay City News.

UPDATE
: according to the Chronicle, it seems that the guy who tried setting little ol' Gracie flame last night is none other that Paul David Addis. Yes, the same gent who prematurely torched "the man" at Burning Man earlier this year. Whoa, is right.

Addis was arrested last August, charged with felony arson, for setting ablaze the Burning Man "four days before its scheduled immolation." At the time of his Burning Man fit of arson behavior, he told media outlets that "this was not an act of vengeance, it was one of love...a love of the ethos that is fading at Burning Man."

We're dying to know what his excuse will be for this most recent bit of artistry. Well, other than, "I'm crazy."

It seems the guy they've arrested is none other than Paul David Addis, the guy who pre-torched the Burning Man this year.

Oh my %@$#^^@$%^$%@#^ God!

I'll second that...

He's obviously completely frigging insane and should be in a flame-retardant padded-cell.

Brock- note use of hypens.I wanted to brighten up your Monday.

what an enormous douchebag.

Hey Addis . . . did it look at you? Did the fire look at you? Did you want to watch the firemen dance with the animal?

Like you Addis, I'm worried that some aspects of our public sphere have lost their "spontaneity".

The authorities want to send you you to a plain old unexpressive cell. Boring! And therapy? Yawn.

Let's get creative! How about pink tar & green feathers? Then we'll lock you a stockade outside the corner of, oh say, Turk & Leavenworth for no less than 30 days and nights. Cool! People can walk by and exercise their "religious rights" on various parts of your physique! I'm afraid the best you can hope for is that they sign your leg like a cast.

Does that work for you? No? Well who the fuck cares what you think. It'll look cool.

See? Our worlds aren't that far apart after all, are they?

Also, what with it's stone-y facade, the cathedral looks impossible to burn down -- especially with a few sparklers and snakes, or whatever he had in his sack.

Was he in Southern California last week?

Arson isn't exactly at the top of the "comedy crime capers" list this week.

So, a guy who sounds like he was taking steps in the direction of mental derangment/criminality got his first taste of burning something down at Burning Man and found, much like a serial killers first kill, that he....liked it.

Sounds like once wasn't enough, and he needed to continue his need to burn, burn, burn.

Oooh, $488,000 bail. They're not fooling around this time.

Is there going to be a benefit on Valencia Street somewhere? After all, "terrorism" is just another man's "performance art":

Here's some interesting video of Paul Addis.

Whatever, dude.

Thanks Sangfroid826 for the Haloween shock video.

It's nice to know there are bona fide maniacs like him who could be our next-door neighbors.

My diagnosis: One too many doses of a really bad batch, or he stopped his daily doses of the Walgreens kind.

Didn't he used to be a lawyer?

Used to be a lawyer, but he stopped paying his bar dues.

A little pricey compared to the U.S. average. 400 bones a year.

If you're a lawyer and you can't drum up enough business to afford $400 a year bar dues maybe you should think about adopting another profession.

However, please don't consider changing careers to insane criminal anarchist-slash-performance artist. If there is any profession more overrepresented in SF than lawyers, it's insane criminal anarchist-slash-performance artists. Just move to Austin already.
