R.I.P. When The Lights Go Down In The City
November 2004 - September 2007

It was SFist's first editor Jackson West who asked me to write a music column back in '04 and he also came up with the name of it. I thought, it's SF-related and a quote from a Journey song - perfect! For the past three years my aim has been to tell you about the music in San Francisco that I like and hopefully expose you to stuff you've never heard. And so you could actually hear and enjoy the music instead of just reading about it, I tried to give away a CD or tickets each week. You've noticed by now that I've broken out using the royal "we". I figured I could break the rules since this is the last post I'll write for SFist. I'm moving away from San Francisco, back home to Austin, Texas, which is probably the only reason I'd stop writing for this incredible site.

It's bittersweet for me to leave San Francisco, especially since we have such an amazing music scene. I've lived in Manhattan and Austin, two stellar cities for music, but San Francisco has hands down the most impressive offering of concert venues of any city I know. From fancy to grimy, cramped to echoing, from headlining to up-and-coming, San Francisco has the perfect venue for any performance. My personal favorite is the Great American Music Hall with its warm acoustics, intimate character, unobstructed views, and an entire backstage world downstairs where I've run into old friends and made new ones. Cafe Du Nord and Bottom of the Hill are also close to my heart since they often host bands that are on the brink of getting bigger. And then there are the venues like Bimbo's and Saratoga's Mountain Winery which are unlike any others you'll ever visit, and incredile patrons of the arts like the folks behind Noise Pop, Popscene and the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Combine all that with San Francisco's proximity to Los Angeles, and it means that almost every tour comes through here, often on the first go round when bands are poised to break (or break down). It would take too long to name all the great music coming out of the bay area, from John Vanderslice and his Tiny Telephone studio to bands earning their chops at the Hotel Utah or Hemlock (like one of my favorites, Birds & Batteries) to acts like Two Gallants who are now away on tour more than they are at home. Then there's the indie labels, photographers, promoters, Amoeba!, innovative technology...San Francisco does a tremendous amount to support talent, creativity and ideas, even if there's nowhere to park your tour van.

This all makes for a phenomenal mix of musical opportunity - whether you're an artist or an audience member, please don't take it for granted! There are amazing performances going on almost every night of the week and it's my greatest wish that you all go out and enjoy them.
He's aiming to fulfill that promise with ooma, a company he founded in 2005 that has a whole new take on telephony. The ooma hub device will connect to a broadband connection and replace your traditional phone service, leading to vastly reduced phone bills--it enables unlimited U.S. domestic calls to any wireless or landline phone number. While the hub device itself weighs in at about $400 for those not lucky enough to be early adopters via the company's "White Rabbit BETA program," bills beyond that initial investment will be negligible. General availability should happen some time this fall.

ooma's gotten media play for a couple reasons -- nobody doing business in Silicon Valley is immune Valleywag's sharpened pen, after all. Also, much has been made in the press and on the podwaves about the involvement of Ashton Kutcher in the company. Can ooma succeed? We have no clue. It sounds pretty cool to us -- we'll leave the prognostication to those tech types like Engadget and Mossberg. We're more interested in the man behind it all -- and Frame, a San Francisco resident, answered a few questions for us:

1) ooma's located in Palo Alto, but you're a San Francisco resident, right? What brought you to the city? Why's Palo Alto a good place for ooma while San Francisco is a good place for Andrew?

I was born in Las Vegas but came to the bay to work for Cisco. San Jose was pretty boring for a young single guy, so I somehow convinced Cisco to allow me to work from home out of Manhattan Beach. After doing that for a while, I decided it was time to return to the bay. I wanted to start a company with a huge vision and it required one of the greatest teams ever assembled. At ooma we first had to build the product, which required a wide range of engineering talent. A high concentration of software and hardware talent exists in San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, etc. Palo Alto was the obvious choice for the office, but I chose to live in San Francisco. San Francisco is one of the greatest cities in the world – outstanding restaurants, beautiful views, rich history, diverse communities, and colorful character.

No, not these Chosen Ones (white Christian gospel choir) or these (psychic powers): this Chosen Ones is a documentary about the Jewish music scene in New York by a German filmmaker/tourist, which had its world premiere at the Castro for the SFJFF on Monday night.

Sigh -- what can we say here? Well, because we like to keep it positive, here's the good things about the movie: it was interesting seeing a diverse group of Jewish musicians in Manhattan, like the Hasidic African-American rapper Y-Love (YouTube clip above) to Orthodox rabbi and anti-folker Rav Shmuel. Um, and director Wendla Nolle seemed like a nice person who had a nice time in New York.

We feel sufficiently bad about going negative about the rest of the movie that we've moved it to after the jump.
But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too - two of them in -Ist cities.

Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the city's Congonhas airport in wet weather, then raced over a very heavily-trafficked avenue during rush hour, before crashing into a gas station.

For Gothamist, New York City's aging infrastructure caused a huge steam pipe explosion in Midtown Manhattan that killed one, left two seriously injured and injured at least forty others. But in lighter news, Whole Foods' release of the "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" caused fights amongst eco-trend-seekers. Speaking of eco-trends, congestion pricing was kind of approved to move forward in the Big Apple. NY State finally sued Exxon-Mobil for the mid-century Brooklyn oil spill that was about twice the size of the Exxon Valdez spill. And Gothamist has videos of their conversations with the manager and residents of the famous Hotel Chelsea.

SFist woke up to a minor jolt Friday morning, care of a 4.2 earthquake along the nervously-monitored Hayward fault, but what's really shaking the city is theorange-laced anticipation of Barry Bonds inching closer to more record-breaking behavior. Other behavior includes VVM publication SF Weekly's dismissal of their web editor, Matt Stroud - SFist has the post that booted him out of said position. And speaking of controversial posts, the Propaganda III art exhibit had many arguing about freedom of speech, racism, anti-Semitism, and other precious topics of debate. Also, local SF Supes Chris Daly and Bevan Dufty almost throw down, one automobile owner's desperate plea for a crime-free life, and SFist alum Derrick ("Obsession With Food" scribe) moves on to glory via his cover story in the Chronicle's wine section. SFist couldn't be more proud. Sob.

Londonist celebrated their Britishness this week. Their inner toffs were liberated at the Chap Olympiad, at which the upper classes compete for "golden bowler hats" in events such as umbrella hockey and "slap the bounder." What-ho. They also attended a discussion evening in a ladies restroom - or "toilet," to use the local lingo. Meanwhile, with the Transformers movie on the way to the UK, London's cab drivers have been converting their motors into giant pink rabbits. And a new graffiti artist was in town, decorating London's walls with 22 stencils of Lennon, Jagger and other musical icons. Londonist has got it all mapped.

Now because it's New York, it's instantly taken more seriously because it's New York and everything is taken more seriously there (damn East Coast bias). In a way, it’s kind of like Jamba Juice--everyone thought it was some crazy only-in-California idea and now they're everywhere. Already, the New York Times has jumped in and said it's a fabulous idea and the New York Post, not known for it's liberal ideas, thinks it's well worth considering. A poll was also taken earlier which said that a majority of people in the city support it and just from comments on Gothamist, it looks like readers are in favor.

The idea, called congestion charging, was actually proposed a year ago but is now being championed by Mayor Mike. The idea is to charge commuters $8 ($21 for trucks) for driving into Manhattan and people could pay for it using the EZTrak system or their license plates could be photographed and sent an invoice. The whole plan is expected to bring in about $500 million annually into the city's coffers which would be used to help finance transportation related issues.

Here in SF, the idea is being studied and the results of the study should come out, hopefully, sometime soon.
After 12 years, THE STREAK IS OVER -- your Golden State Warriors will make the playoffs this year as the number eight seed in the Western Conference.

Unlike Monte Poole or Tim Kawakami, there is no "will they or won't they" coming from SFist. This is a done deal. Their season-long fever has broken just in time, and the Warriors are playing the kind of ball they need to play, when they need to play it -- like late in the game, like late in the season.

Though now tied with the Clippers after Tuesday night's action, for almost one whole week now, your Golden State Warriors have been proud owners of the number eight playoff spot in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (give that line a little Cosell when you read it). And they're gold Jerry, gold!

Really, the Warriors should be about five games out of the playoffs right now, but for once, fate is on their side. Just as the Warriors have started to play well, going 6-2 in the last 8 games, the rest of the Western Conference midpackers have completely collapsed. The Clippers have lost 14 of their last 21 games; the Timberwolves 15 of 21; the Kings 12 of 19; the Sonics 14 of 23; the Hornets 8 of their last 11. Fine, if nobody else wants it, the Warriors are more than happy to snatch up el ocho. No, not that ocho pasado, not until the second round of the playoffs, that is.

The story beautifully unraveled and came back together in ways that one would only expect to happen in a scripted movie, and we were all elated to see it actually happening in real life. The process of making the film also seemed to be an impetus for this evolution. Plus, the fact that Tara's mother Evie is such an exuberant and eccentric woman helped too—we get the feeling she might've already had the knowledge that she would one day star in her own film. Watch the second screening of tomorrow at 4:30 pm at the Victoria Theatre as part of IndieFest, and you'll see what we mean.

Tara had always wondered if her mother Evie was mentally ill. Mental illness ran in the family but was never spoken about. They moved at least once every year during Tara's childhood, and Evie rarely held down a steady job because she believed "working is conforming." Tara always kind of felt like the parent instead of the child, and one of the things that Evie told Tara throughout the film was that "the best way to help you was to leave you alone." (Maybe she was ultimately right in this context...) Tara had moved to New York when she was 19, after a manic Evie had threatened to kill her. "When I stopped doing everything for her, she fell apart," Tara said.

When Tara decided to reunite with Evie after five estranged years and make a documentary about it, she said she had to hire "two filmmakers and a therapist." And boy, did they do a good job. The camera shots of the sweeping Kansas landscape were absolutely breathtaking, and the dialogue was equally rich. Tara's mother was full of stories and visions. One of the first things Evie said in the film was that she felt like Nancy Drew when Nancy had lost her earring. She looked everywhere for it, and then at one point she dropped her flashlight. When the flashlight rolled to a certain point in the corner, that's where she found her earring. Evie said that something "just has to find you."

Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into a bit of an argument about whether gridiron—that's American football—is "rubbish".

Chicagoist sounded a cautious note about the supposed declared candidacy of Barack Obama this week. The staff were much more optimistic about the plans to put organic food into the public school system, even if they usually start their mornings with a can of pop (they don't call it soda in the Windy City). Finally, Chicagoist took a moment to remember when Martin Luther King, Junior's journey brought him to Chicago, and talked with some experts to compile a list of the biggest sins in sketch comedy.

Torontoist had some serious skunk in the trunk. But, after taking a dip in a tomato-juice filled tub, they were able to look at ugly condo branding, get excited about mascot heads, and even move snow.

Austinist reported that last week's bird deaths weren't caused by poisoning. Texas Governor Rick Perry seems to have mastered the musical art of the "not" joke by inviting Ted Nugent to his inauguration, but Austinist is taking its music seriously. A new upscale Austin restaurant is trez disappointing, but the heroics of a UT grad student and his brother definitely are not.
Houstonist discovered why some people shouldn't be mothers: they misplace their babies.
