Daly-Dufty Fight
Oh No, Chris Daly! We don't even know what to say right now. We'd been hearing rumors all day (thanks to those hard-working folks over at the SFist Tips line) about a fight between District 6's rebearded progressive bad boy and the more moderate and clean-shaven Bevan Dufty of District 8, but didn't get confirmation of it until the Chron went live with their story.
Sigh -- we don't even want to go into this, it's just embarrassing for everyone. So Daly, maybe a little unhappy about not getting seconded for his budget motion, was going back and forth with Dufty throughout the meeting, and Dufty finally said "For someone who sees himself as the strongest opponent to the mayor, you've done more to re-elect him than everyone in this room combined." Ooooooh.
Near the end of the meeting, which went on pretty long (just like the Senate was doing with Iraq, huh?), Daly then approached Dufty and they got into it. It got sufficiently heated that Dufty called Daly "a third-grade bully" and said "Why don't you just do what you want to do? Why don't you just punch me in the face?" Daly then said, "How dare you -- I'm not a bully," and bouncer/prez Aaron Peskin had to jump in and separate the two of them. Ladies and gentlemen: Aaron Peskin, the man with the toughest job in the City and County of San Francisco!
Daly's calling it a "nonissue," and Peskin described it as a "sidebar spat," saying, "I'm not proud of it, but it's not the end of the world" -- even though Tom Ammiano said it seemed threatening, and Jake McGoldrick was sufficiently worried that he mentioned something to the sheriff.
Update!: Here's Daly's side of the story, which includes the full text of his email exchange with the Chron.
After the jump -- we rate the choice quotes about Daly from the other supervisors to C.W. Nevius, who's now somehow moved from the "is Anna Nicole Smith your girl friend" beat onto city politics for the Chron?
How do you know when your political fortunes have turned in San Francisco? When they put C.W. "everyman" Nevius on your tale. We gotta say, we spend a lot of time mocking Nevius (quick, C.W. -- name three of the first ten amendments!), but he definitely got some damning quotes out of the supes today. We rate them on a scale of 1 to 4 green ties. (Sorry, we don't know how to embed little dancing green tie images in our posts, or we'd do that too.)
--Ross Mirkarimi: "He's been effective. But you also have to be an effective tactician. Otherwise you undermine yourself." Score: 3 Green Ties. If anyone else said it, it'd just be two, but the whole coming from Chris's buddy Ross thing gives it one more green tie zing.
--Michela Alioto-Pier: "There is a difference between passionate about things and being mean. The fact that he couldn't get seconds on his amendments showed that people had simply had enough." Score: 2 Green Ties. If anyone else had said it, it'd have scored three, but c'mon, this is the lady who forgot to show up to a meeting on her own agenda item!
--Aaron Peskin: "God bless him. The things that he says are legitimate points of view in a representative body. But sometimes he's an absolute bonehead and he doesn't help his cause." Score: 4 Green Ties! The "God bless him" was a nice touch.
And Chris's take on it? "I'm clearly the subject of a coordinated negative campaign right now. But people have figured out that, no matter what they say about me, I will continue to speak truth to power and act on my convictions. This may not make me popular, but over time, it does earn me respect." Score? Four Ties, but they're not green -- they're BLUE. This is not helping your cause, Chris!

QUOTE: Sigh -- we don't even want to go into this, it's just embarrassing for everyone. END QUOTE
Embarrassing? Hardly! I take it you've never watched the British Parliament, for example, in session. Fragile and delicate people would probably have a problem with sessions of Parliament. You're so used to seeing and hearing the stale mannequin-clone robotic politicians we have here in the States like the ones in this useless congress in DC with their predictable scripted statements, and phony smiles and who often don't sound like they have any emotion or the ability for such in them!...other than pounding a podium at the appropriate moment per the script that somebody else wrote for them.
Excellent! Wish there was a fight and while I'm no fan of Daly he is enough of a man still to not punch someone that is spineless like Bevan, even Daly wouldn't stoop so low.
i was actually expecting daly and maxwell to get into it yesterday when the news broke that daly was going to champion the people's concerns with the big development in hunters point.
Daly needs serious help. Get back on your meds Chris....
Has anyone noticed that Daly is looking more and more Taliban every day?
The beard looks sinister. All he needs is one of those swami turbans to cap off the look...
I hope the cops are driving by his house now and again snc is wf n kd r n jeapordy. Snr r ltr f h hsn't lrd h wil bt thm bd. W ll knw ths s hw bsrs ct nd dn't thnk frstrtd Dl tks t t n hs fml? [EDITED and disemvoweled FOR VIOLATION OF GOTHAMIST POLICY. -eds. Yogo, we've talked about this offline -- keep it up and we're going to have to ban you.]

my favorite quote in the chronicle article, daly calls this a budget with no compassion.
what the fuck do you call the 160 million we are going to piss away again this year on your worthless constituents?
we should bull doze all the sro's and the tenderloin and the 6rth street corridor just like they did the what was in the place of moscone today.
Dearest Suckafree,
What do you have against crack heads? They do contribute to the local economy ya know!
Think of all the small plastic baggies it takes to supply them. Them sacks ain't cheap.
What about all the employees it takes to clean the bum piss and syringes off the sidewalks every morning?
Kiss a crack head today! Just go to D6 to find one.
sounds like i'm not the only one getting fed up with the waste of money that is attempting to help these people with tax dollars.

hey I got all 8 hours and 48 minutes of the tape from tuesday and can't find it. Did this happen after the public comments on the Ceasar Chavez project? befause that's about when they adjourned
or when did this happen?
So, a couple of politicos get into an argument after a 9 hour meeting and now Daly is a closet wife-beater and we should bulldoze an entire neighborhood?
Seems to me its the Daly haters who are the real foaming at the mouth lunatics. yogo, suckafree, mariconsoy - why don't you all just get it over with allready and move to Orange County? you'd obviously be happier there and it would save the rest of us from your tired, repetitive bleatings.
Do it, Lumpy!!
lol...
china you better get a job soon because the free ride is over
Hey guys -- here's the Chris Daly post warning:
We monitor these particular comment threads very closely and, per the new editor's directives, we will be taking down posts that we feel go over the line.
This note from us constitutes everyone's first warning. Comments made under the guest alias will be given less leeway, and repeat violators of the policy will have their IP addresses banned.
Yes, it's a subjective standard; yes, we will be enforcing it for pro and anti Daly people alike. Thanks for understanding, and please keep the dialogue civil.
They would burn a cross on my front lawn if I lived in Orange County. They hate fags.
If I moved, it would be Big Sur. Nice views, no yuppies or crack heads.
Laughable. (That is the nicest thing I can say about the entire affair.)
ah CW Nevius, the king of the obvious, finally weighs in...I guess now that "24" is not on tv he hasn't had as much to write about....it's amazing how many people get laid off at the Chron and yet CW stays....
the Chron has been blasting away at "the board" for some time now, and the "progressives" are happy to go along with it because they think somehow it'll help 'em. Dunno why they think that but they do.
3rd Grade Bully is unfortunately appropriate ... unfortunate for the people of District 6 represented by this volatile retard.
"we will be enforcing it for pro and anti Daly people alike"
i call bullshit.
Daly need to get an American flag tie is what he needs to do.
Ok, I have the clip from where Dalys motion gets the silent treatment and he walks out
http://www.bluoz.com/blog/index.php?/archives/181-Daly-motion-deniedwalks-out.html
Marionsoy, do you really think that all you need to look sinister is a beard and a turban? Wow. I think that is rather offensive.
sorry about this, I changed the address because the forward slash was getting on my nerves

that video might be more important that the alledged fight, but I'd still like to know if that was even recorded by city hall. I'm starting to think this happened after they adjourned and cut the tape. If they recorded it, I can make a clip
If you really want to build traffic on this site, you post something about Chris Daly or Grafitti.
Hey this is actually ThatChick signing in (something is wrong w/ my computer)
Let me get this straight Daly walks over to Dufty or is it the other way around?
Both Daly and Dufty are like 6ft tall and Peskin who isn't tall enough to go into a tide pool at Great America without a life jacket tries to "pull Daly away from Dufty" what were they doing exactly kissing each other.
A word to the wise Peskin next time ask Mirkarimi to step in and break up the slap fest because he's got muscle and a nicer hair cut.
No wonder Gavin Newsom won't go into BOS chambers what's worse is that Alyssa Milano misspelled his name on her blog (Why does everyone add an e?)
what free ride - i work 50+ hours a week.
personally, i'd bet good money that the "fight" has been completely overblown by the Chron in their interest in creating a big controversy - mountain out of a molehile - in order to sell papers/page views at a newspaper company that is quickly going into the toilet.
News Flash to Chron - If you want to sell papers, going the NY Post/Murdoch style tabloid route is NOT going to sell more papers in this town - last time I checked the Examiner has to give itself away for FREE. I might recommend, oh, more intelligent, better written, in-depth coverage of more serious topics than "who dissed who at the last BOS meeting".
LOUD NOISES!
If Dufty really that tall? The one time I ran into him in my hood (his district) he seemed very small to me. Maybe I was on something at the time.
Chris was elected 3 times as an activist, and has not been nothing but what he was elected to do. For any of those who supported Chris for when Chris supported them to doubt Chris is distinctively foul and only tells me that they were opportunist’s. And for anyone to beret what he does are scared of what is real.(truth). But I have to realize that people have always have been put into a box of beliefs and can’t expect them to take a look from the outside in. Sad everything can’t be all black and/or white. Thats only reserved for those in the box. The real of things is (truth) that the it has other unlimited hues. Like streaming green.
The twist with Dufty is he came in as a supporter of Newsom then realized that support was miss placed only to take the bait. Since this is the re-election of a person that has so many stings attached to him being in office to begin with what do we get? Is a campaign to try and hamper the scissors.
Dufty is like 5-9 150. He is a little guy. And a queen. Daly is around 6-2 240. This is like Nelson picking on Ralph Wiggum.
Funny how Ammiano who cries EVERY TIME someone gives the homos trouble is quiet now.
"personally, I'd bet good money that the "fight" has been completely overblown"
likely true but the fact that Chris can't even get a second on his motions is telling.
Daly seemed to be becoming more pragmatic and willing to make deals in recent years. A maturing as a legislator, but he now seems so consumed with a personal hatred of the mayor that he has lost the ability to govern and compromise.
I would think that after 3 successful elections, he would learn that saying things like "That's Big Daddy Daly to you, man!" to a public commenter (3400 CC thing) or otherwise dropping F-bombs and insulting people is NOT the way to get the GOOD points you have to make heard or recognized by anyone. We're too busy thinking to ourselves, "What a childish bully District 6 has for a Supe" instead of "maybe we should put more money into mental health instead of potholes."
Although, if you're going to put more money into mental health, we need to put more money into enforcing drug laws. A lot of the crazies on the street became crazy from frying their brain cells with various drugs over the years. Idiots.
personally, if i had to work next to that waste of space Michela Alioto-Pier, I'd want to reach over and throttle someone too.
I just want to point out the irony that the very people who are attacking Chris Daly for being immature and vicious are doing so in a fashion that is immature and vicious. I believe there is room for legitimate debate here about the rift at the Board, but certain people have to stop doing the very thing they allege Daly is doing in order for any of their points to be taken seriously.
to quote Daly:
"I'm clearly the subject of a coordinated negative campaign right now. But people have figured out that, no matter what they say about me, I will continue to speak truth to power and act on my convictions. This may not make me popular, but over time, it does earn me respect."
Um, Chris, have you noticed you are POWER as well? You are an elected official, make about $90,000 a year, own a 3 bedroom condominium, have health insurance, a retirement plan (both paid for by taxpayers), and 1 child with a second on the way, and your wife is a stay at home mother.
Chris -- you are beginning to get a Dan White-ish victim mentality. Stop being such a hypocrite and criticizing the rest of the Supervisors and the Mayor. Why not check where you are on the POWER scale.
Oh yeah -- you're also a straight white male who went to a super elitist college and you're from the suburbs. Stop taking your white guilt out on this City.
Can someone tell me : How come Chris Daly is called "Lumpy"?
????
Dufty voted against the question time initiative. I find that more disturbing than this non-incident.
Perhaps we're throwing the kitchen sink at Chris Daly because it does not effect our job performance to do so. However, his immature behavior DOES effect his ability to perform for his constituents and get things done for his constituents.
Sweet Melissa, once again you're the voice of reason. THANK YOU!
I think it's funny how people howl about how immature Chris Daly is, then resort to name calling and below the belt comments only a talk radio host could love. I mean, jeez, people if I was an outsider and read this I'd think both Daly AND all you Daly Haters (who hide behind "guest") were in need of a swimming pool full of prozac.
By the way, in all this name calling and whatnot, I have yet to see any mainstream media outlet provide detailed analysis of the Mayor's budget, any alternatives, and how they affect citizens and their daily life. And no one is talking about what happened to the MUNI reform measure proposed by Peskin....was it defeated by special interests? What's more important, a buch of hooey from a politico, or real issues that affect San Francisco taxpayers?
Anyone? anyone?
Daly is the elected official - perhaps there's a higher duty that goes with being an elected official? I would lower the bar for a cocaine user, now would I lower the bar for a verbally abusive man.
errr... I would NOT lower the bar for a cocaine user, NOR would I lower the bar for a verbally abusive man. (clearly, time for me to get some lunch)
great points greg. i fear the muni reforms will die in chamber since they asked for anyone to be held accountable. the unions will never stand for that.
The budget is $6.06B, and per capita we spend 13 percent more than New York City, which is hardly the capital of frugality. That's a $788 million excess. New York has twice the poverty rate to deal with, employs 25% more police per capita, yet spends less.
But Dufty called Daly a bully, so we have to stop thinking now.
I would love- nay, kill- to see Ross Mirkarimi either in a fight, or stopping a fight.
I'm gonna go touch myse- I mean... make some food....
