Moby must be sick with envy over this one. Tonight the "unconventional young network," Emmy Award-winning Current TV, will air a taped, private, hour-long Radiohead concert on New Year's Eve (and on New Year's day on broadcast Current TV.) Thom Yorke and his merry band of croonies will perform each track off of their top-listed 2007 effort, In Rainbows.

With words that could spark the battle for the title of Christ 2.0, David Neuman, President of Programming for Current TV, says that, "with a ground-breaking network and revolutionary band both serving as visionaries in the new media and music landscapes, this partnership is a natural fit." Wow.
They lose to the Trail Blazers. If you want to feel better, for those of you who haven't read this yet, check out J.A. Adande's story on the Warriors on ESPN.com. Money quote:

Think about what life would be like if the world operated under the same principles as the Golden State Warriors. Hot fudge sundaes would be nutritious and help you lose weight. Whale-sized sport-utility vehicles would get 50 miles per gallon. "I Love New York" would be up for an Emmy... The thing about the Warriors is they make no sense

-Hey, the Giants signed somebody, Aaron Rowand, who was signed for five years and $60 million bucks. This after being named as possible suitors of every possible free agent and signing absolutely none of them. Rowand's not bad-- he's a pretty decent hitter-- but is known mainly for running into a fence and breaking his nose trying to catch a ball. We're guessing Sabes is thinking the old axiom that you need strong defense up the middle and Rowand is some strong defense up the middle. He is also known as "Gamer," for what’s that worth. The good thing is that with six outfielders on the roster already, they have another one. Who doesn't like an an entire team of outfielders? Still, we're holding our fire on this signing as we don't think it's the only move they'll make, just the first in a long series of moves to make the team halfway decent. They will make those moves, right? Right?

Anyways, if you want to read to really good articles about the mess the Giants have made for themselves, check out Ann Killion and Tim Kawakami's articles in the Merc.
Now they're in some more trouble with conservatives for celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Sputnik by putting a sputnik looking thing on their front page. This is bad because Sputnik was the creation of those Godless commie pink bastards, <strike>the Bay Guardian</strike> the Soviet Union. Of course, the Soviet Union collapsed due to Ronald Reagan's imploring of them to tear down the wall and is now an ally run by a democratically elected dictator with a habit of poisoning political enemies.

Next up is that conservatives caught them deleting Google ads run by an aide to Maine Senator Susan Collins that were posted on the site to protest bad puns, mainly the General Betray Us thing. The ads suddenly disappeared and conservatives are in full umbrage mood in protesting. For Google's part, they just said there was some problems with that type of ad being run as policy has it that they don't run ads with trademarks and it was nothing personal. As for conservatives, they decided to strike back the only way they know how-- have Sean Hannity go on the attack.

Well, Niners fans can be placed into two groups, the "we're just happy to be here" group and the "my eyes...they burn!" group. Criticism seems to be over their offensive performance which has in a word, kinda sucked. Is Nolan too conservative? Is Alex Smith ready? Is Smith really all that good to begin with? Was last year's offensive improvement just due to Norv Turner? Did James Spader really beat James Gandolfini for "Best Actor in a Dramatic Series?" And what's the over/under on the 49ers getting over 100 yards against the Steely McBeans? We dunno. All we know is that the implosion of the New Orleans Saints is killing us fantasy football and we are NOT happy.

Anyways, in honor of the passing of Brett Somers to the Great Gameshow Panel in the sky, we present the baseball scores all Match Game style.

We’re wondering if Dominic has the same pants-dropping (second from left), awe-inducing powers as his older brother. Guess we shall find out. Welcome to town, Dominic!

Looking forward to it, we guess? Go, San Francisco Jersey Boys? It just doesn’t sound right.

Director and MacArthur genius grant recipient Stanley Nelson (who previously directed the Emmy-award-winning ) has put together a sensitive and thoughtful history of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple that stays away from the usual pat explanations of the situation (as Nelson said in the post-screening Q&A, the story of "900 crazy people drinking Kool-Aid in the jungle") to outline a story that's even more disturbing when you realize how almost-acceptable the situation was that Jones created.

As you can see in the picture at the left, Jim Jones was tight in San Francisco local politics, and was considered a key part of George Moscone's (short-lived) mayoral triumph in 1977. Peoples Temple promoted a religious doctrine of interracial brotherhood, responsibility for the poor, and a socialist utopia in which everyone looked out for everyone else. Doesn't sound so bad, does it? Peoples Temple also participated in a number of progressive social movements, attending rallies and organizing get-out-the-vote campaigns, and as a result, Jim Jones was awarded a seat on the board of the San Francisco Housing Authority (!!!) before he fled for Guyana, killed a state congressman, and orchestrated the mass suicide of over 900 people.

Our mouth kept dropping open at the footage that Nelson had obtained -- interviews with Jones's childhood acquaintances (all of whom agreed he was a weird little dude, torturing and killing cats so he could hold funerals for them), sermons by Jones at his temple on Geary (now the post office next to the Fillmore, where the downtown-bound 38 Geary stop is), footage of followers seeing Guyana for the first time, and the most chillingly, live film of the final days in Jonestown and the fateful visit by Congressman Leo Ryan (and a young Sen. Jackie Speier) and tape recordings of Jim Jones urging people to "drink faster, faster, faster." Dude, we were freaked out.

We don't know what's bigger news: the fact that Rita Moreno stars in The Glass Menagerie, one of the greatest plays in the American canon, or the fact that director Les Waters has never seen a production of the play in his life. (Or so he told the press a while back.) Well, he's from England, so it's OK. Actually, it's one of the reasons why we want to check out this play--he's sure to bring a fresh interpretation to the production. Oh, and Rita Moreno. You know, she's from West Side Story; she's one of the few performers ever to win an Oscar, an Emmy, the Tony and the Grammy. Ah, but has she won a Pulitzer? Yeah, well, neither have we.
