They were also restaurants, hotels, wheel exchange stops, Pony Express routes, and even brothels.

“7 Mile House was all of the above, and we are the last original mile house standing in the original location,” she says.

Now a family-run Filipino-American restaurant and sports bar, 7 Mile House is celebrating its 167th anniversary this Sunday with a full-day blowout of food, booze, and fun. It all starts a 10:30 am history lesson on those 167 years from current owner Vanessa Garcia. “We bribe people by giving them free mimosas and coffee,” Garcia says of the Sunday morning history class.

They’ll also bribe the first 200 people there with free to-go adobo and rice bowls, and $1.67 Jack Daniels shots all day. “The price goes up by a cent every year,” Garcia tells SFist. Mile Zero was in Portsmouth Square in Chinatown,” Garcia explains. “In a carriage or on horseback, it would typically take you nine hours to get from San Francisco to San Jose. You were riding a horse or horses. You had to feed the horse, let them rest, let them have a drink of water. The same with humans.”

Image: 7 Mile House

She adds that these mile houses of the time “were restaurants, bars, brothels, or pony express stops. 7 Mile House was all of the above.”

Image: 7 Mile House

And many of the previous 7 Mile House owners and patrons were outlaws. “There was one owner who had an HUI — horseback riding under the influence,” Garcia says. That was Lenny Stooler, who also added claw machines at the 7 Mile House, which were a popular form of gambling in the Gold Rush era. “Figurines in the machine were assigned a dollar amount, so if you put your money in, it represented an amount of money, and you would claim the money at the bar," Garcia explains. The two had gone through their share of marital troubles, filing once for divorce but never finalizing it. Paul moved away, then back into the family's garage to save funds for their two boys' education. Asked what he might do if Shelly never came home, he said, "I lost both my parents, and that's a very difficult thing, and so I've gone through with them and shared with them how that feels and what to do to deal with it."

In hindsight, his words are telling. After a dismembered torso was discovered near the Dumbarton Pier and Paul was named a person of interest in the case, he jumped off the Bay Bridge to his death.

In March the torso was identified as having belonged to Shelly according to CBS 5, and Paul was named a suspect in her murder. Finally this week Brisbane police have put speculation to rest, reporting that they believe Paul acted alone in killing his wife and unspooling their theory of a murder-suicide to ABC7.

The police suspect the murder was not premeditated — a telephone conversation indicates Paul was going to bring Shelly a cell phone charger. What happened next may never be known, but it appears that Paul's death was suicide "either out of remorse or the belief that he would be identified as the killer." Police further explained to the news channel that, "This opinion is based on Paul drafting a will in the early morning hours of the 13th, the money transferred to the son's accounts." In fact, it's a bit more complicated: Paul appears to have first deposited money with his sons, then changed his mind, planning to dispose of Shelly's body and report her missing. Paul then took the funds back that he had transferred to his sons. But then he was named a person of interest, the torso was found, and he reverted to his original plan, or so police believe.

The Titchener's were married for 24 years. Police tell the Mercury News that "we are sensitive to the effect this case has had on remaining family members.
Negotiating tactic, empty threat, or real plan, the idea floated last week that San Francisco might annex our southern neighbor city of Brisbane is now moot (if it ever wasn't).

#Brisbannex, as surely everyone (and not just me) was calling the idea, was provocative. It got the people going: Brisbane Mayor Cliff Lentz called it “unthinkable” bullying according to the San Jose Mercury News. But now that's off the table, as the Chronicle implies a private meeting between Peskin and Brisbane Mayor Cliff Lentz sorted some things out. “We had a nice visit," the Chron quotes Supervisor Aaron Peskin who is maybe quoting the Godfather. "They’ve heard us,” he said, seeming to indicate Lentz was ready to push for housing his city has so far stalled on plotting out.

If Brisbane wouldn't build housing, the suggestion appeared to be, San Francisco would annex it and build the damn housing. "SF is happy to build housing on Brisbane Baylands — 684 acres of vacant land," Kim put it on Twitter. Brisbane, a municipality of just 4,000 residents, has been criticized for its Baylands plan, which would develop 8 million square feet of commercial space without any accompanying housing. As it stands, the plan would create an unfair burden for other cities in the region, chiefly San Francisco, where perhaps you've noticed there's already no housing.

Brisbane's Planning Commission voted to recommend that their City Council reject housing on the Baylands site, purchased for development more than 10 years ago by Universal Paragon Corp. Some online commenters (probably from Brisbane) have pointed out that the Baylands site contains toxic waste — True! They'll have to clean it up for commercial development anyway, so that doesn't rule out housing. So, to put Brisbane's feet to the coals, Kim and her fellow progressive Supervisors David Campos and Aaron Peskin proposed a resolution "urging Brisbane to adopt a responsible Land Use Plan for this area that will include needed workforce housing."

Before meeting with Peskin privately, Mayor Lentz spoke publicly in front of the Board of Supervisors, running out his three minutes of allotted time well before he finished reading a long letter to the Board. While it wasn't clear if the Board members planned to let him continue or not, it sounds like Scott Wiener insisted on it. “We’re talking about conquering a neighboring town,” Wiener said according to the Chron. “We can let him finish his letter.”

Per the Merc, Wiener called annexation as proposed by Kim, his current rival for a state senate seat, "bizzare." His hope, he said, was that "we can have an intelligent regional discussion about how we can work together to address our housing crisis, rather than aggressively threaten to take over our neighbor.” Aaron Peskin appears to have felt differently about the maneuver. "I guess we got their attention, huh?” the Chron quotes him as bragging.

San Francisco could use a little more room, couldn't it? The progressive supervisor triumvirate of Jane Kim, Aaron Peskin, and David Campos will present a resolution today that could eventually give it some, the Chronicle reports, exploring a controversial plan to annex our city's southern neighbor, Brisbane, to make it a part of SF.

While that municipality (population 4,000) prepares to build a massive commercial development called the Brisbane Baylands, it appears unwilling to concurrently introduce new housing units, angering supervisors like Jane Kim, who claimed last week that Brisbane sought commercial benefits while foregoing its housing responsibilities. Those would instead fall to San Francisco.

Baylands is a plot of more than 680 acres next to Highway 101. In August, the Brisbane Planning Commission recommended “that no housing be allowed on this site,” and Brisbane's Mayor Cliff Lentz is quoted as having said "There’s all this housing on the SF side... We’ll provide the commercial — SF will provide the housing.” Lentz has since clarified that he was voicing not his own opinion but echoing a common sentiment from constituents. Still, a city document on the plan says that #8220;There will be ample housing in the new developments planned across the border in San Francisco for those working in the Baylands who wish to live nearby.”

Last week, Lentz called Jane Kim's suggestion that SF could annex his city "ridiculous," adding that "Jane Kim obviously doesn’t know anything about Brisbane’s planning process.” Meanwhile, San Francisco advocates have been encouraging Brisbane to adopt a mixed-use plan instead of a purely commercial one, and Brisbane Community Development Director John Swiecki tells Curbed SF that some housing could be provided for. "It's a six to eight month process," he said. "We could end up with any number of units. It doesn't have to be the Doomsday Option of zero."

In order to make a reality of Brannex, as many people and certainly not just one SFist editor are referring to the idea, "landowners owning 50 percent or more of the assessed value of the land within the territory," would need to approve it. And this might be attractive to landowners who believe a San Francisco address will mean an automatic bump in value. (Brisbane is, in case you didn't know, right on SF's border, south of Visitiacion Valley, north of South San Francisco.)

Last week, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Jim Lazarus suggested one reason why Brisbane might be reluctant to create new housing. “Brisbane’s concern is political," he said per the Chronicle. "They don’t want 4,000 new voting residents.” And as San Mateo County Supervisor Adrienne Tissier, whose district includes Brisbane put it, “It’s easy to take all the revenue and not take any responsibility for the people.”

While Supervisor Peskin calls the idea of "exploring annexing Brisbane... provocative," he doesn't seem to consider the proposition unprovoked. "The statements of the elected officials in Brisbane are provocative, too," says Peskin. "What comes around, goes around.”

In the end, this may just be an empty threat to make them build more housing. But we'll see.

Whether it's realistic — or financially feasible — or not, San Francisco is officially in the running to be the host city for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. The U.S. Olympic Committee will be deciding early next year whether to put forward Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., or SF as an official candidate city for the Games, which are estimated to cost upwards of $4.5 billion to put on, as the Chron reports. We've been on the U.S. shortlist since June, but now actual study is being put into this effort, and the final decision on the locale will be made by the international committee in 2017.

San Francisco has never hosted an Olympic Games, and increasingly the undertaking of a modern games has become a bit of a boondoggle. Economics professor Andrew Zimbalist, who's written a book on this topic, calls the $4.5 billion figure nonsense (the Beijing Olympics in 2008 cost closer to $44 billion). "The modern Olympics costs billions and billions of dollars to host," he says, and it doesn't necessarily amount to more tourism or great economic benefit at all.

The Olympic Committee has therefore been emphasizing sustainability, and the construction of temporary structures, which has led to the idea of a $350 million temporary stadium that would need to be built in Brisbane to accommodate 60,000 people and in which there could be opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track and field events. As Chuck Nevius notes, we don't currently have a stadium in the Bay Area that would suffice, since Levi's stadium isn't big enough to fit a 400-meter track and UC Berkeley's Edwards Stadium doesn't have enough seating.

The Games would make use of Levi's Stadium, though, as well as Stanford Stadium and the new Earthquakes’ soccer stadium being built in San Jose. The planned redevelopment of the Oakland Coliseum area may also play into this — and Nevius suggests that for various reasons, including weather, the focal-point stadium should be there and not Brisbane, since Oakland wants to build new stadiums for football and baseball anyway.

Giants President Larry Baer is heading the local effort, and he suggests "there may be some ways to modernize the Games or do it a little differently," but nevertheless it's going to require huge outlays of cash and the securing of some international sponsors. SF previously put in failed bids to host the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Games.

The next Summer Olympics coming up in 2016 will be in Rio, followed by the Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea in 2018, and the Summer Games in 2020 in Tokyo.

DUI Suspect's Shocking Twitter Rant Against Arresting Officer

48-year-old Khalil Jaser was arrested for last summer in Brisbane, California for driving under the influence.
It appears that the Brisbane P.D. was not paying attention to Jaser's tweets (nor was Mel Gibson, for that matter), so the suspect picked up the phone and began leaving cryptic voicemails at the officer's desk. According to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, the officer received seven voicemails in a five-day period at the beginning of September, allegedly saying he “better not go to work,” and “Boom, you’re dead motherfucker.” When the officer finally returned the calls to ask what was meant by those comments, Jaser reportedly told the officer he knew what they meant and began his three-week volley of voicemails.

Jaser posted bail on November 29th and was scheduled to begin his jury trial earlier this week on charges of harassment and resisting arrest, but he was apparently too busy setting up a coffee meeting with Mr. Braveheart himself to make it to court.

The Examiner also emailed Jaser (at an address he tweeted soliciting stories from other people "stuck with fake charges by the government"), but the suspect only responded to ask what the inquiry was about. In the time between posting bail and missing his court date, Jaser has did take a moment to address his arresting officer again in December:

There's currently a $150,000 warrant out for Jaser's arrest, but he probably already knows that since he's got the government all figured out:
