But her good vibes did not last, and she’s now considering leaving the Bay Area, as KTVU reports the woman was brutally beaten in an unprovoked attack 17th and Franklin streets. She tells KTVU the group of attackers did not even attempt to steal anything from her, and simply beat her senseless for unknown reasons.

Note: The video below has images of some pretty gruesome injuries.

The woman who gave the name Amanda Raye, concealing her full name for safety reasons, had just left a downtown Oakland bar and grabbed some take-out. "The next thing I know, someone is hitting me upside the head and a bunch of people are kicking me and beating me,” she told KTVU.

"The doctors told me that I had 11 lacerations in the back of my head, and a level 2 concussion and they identified multiple bruises," Raye continued. Pointing to her chest, she noted, "Right across here, I have a foot chest mark from someone stomping on my chest."

Raye could not estimate the exact number of attackers in the group, but guessed they were all between the ages of 17 and 20 years old.

"They made zero effort to steal anything from me, they did nothing to take anything from me, it was just legitimate hate," she added. “They kept reiterating, ‘die fat bitch, stupid fat bitch,’ as they had their cell phones recording over me, as they kicked me in the face and in the ribs.”

Oddly, Raye points out that one of her attackers tried to help retrieve her phone, which the group of them had just smashed. She says that another attacker apparently got second thoughts at one point, and pleaded with the others to stop beating her.

Even when the attack was over, Raye’s indignities continued.

"I ran out into the middle of the street begging for anyone to stop and help me, and cars were speeding past me, honking at me," she told KTVU. "It took a while and a young couple stopped to help me."

While Raye has made a police report, KTVU says that Oakland Police “told her that her case is 15th in the investigation queue, and unfortunately, this kind of violence is very common in the city.”

If you have any information on this incident, you’re asked to call the Oakland PD Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3426. KTVU has the additional detail that the attacks occurred at the 7-Eleven on Bayshore Boulevard near Arleta Avenue. The suspect attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended and is in police custody.

The Chronicle reports that the suspect “attacked several people” at the store, but from the additional detail from KTVU, it sounds like there were at least three victims. “The suspect approached a 26-year-old man who was waiting at the bus stop in front of the 7-Eleven on Bayshore,” that station reports. “The suspect pulled the 26-year-old into the convenience store and beat him. The suspect also attacked a 70-year-old employee and prevented the two victims from calling 911. He then approached the man he allegedly killed."

KPIX adds that officers and medical personnel arrived on the scene and attempted to give the 73-year-old man CPR. But he died at the scene, and his identity will not be released until next-of-kin have been notified.

"They had a dead body sitting on the side of the street with a tarp over it,” neighborhood resident Giesha Calloway told KTVU. “It was really bad. There was a lot of blood. It didn't look right.”

This was San Francisco's 44th homicide of the year to date.

We still don’t know the names of the other victims, nor their condition. A press release from the SFPD with more information about the incident has apparently not yet been posted.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444, or send a text to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.

Related: Mission District Father Brutally Attacked at 18th and Valencia Streets In Seemingly Random Violence [SFist]

Image: Ming C. via Yelp

Mission District Father Brutally Attacked at 18th and Valencia Streets In Seemingly Random Violence

We have a description of the suspect who is still at large, in a Tuesday night random attack that has reportedly left a man with a “half detached ear” and facial scars “for life.”

SF News

Mission District

valencia street

beating

attacks

Joe Kukura

We have a description of the suspect who is still at large, in a Tuesday night random attack that has reportedly left a man with a “half detached ear” and facial scars “for life.”

The Mission District Police Station is on the lookout for a suspect described as Caucasian and blond, for a brutal Tuesday night beating at 18th and Valencia Streets, according to KTVU. At roughly 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, the victim Ramon Reyna, described by KTVU as 51 years old (though KRON4’s reports says he’s 52) was walking his Chihuahua, when confronted by a man who tried to instigate his own dog to attack Reyna’s dog. When the dog would not attack, the suspect assaulted Reyna so badly he required “20 stitches to close the injuries in his forehead” and with a “half detached ear.”

"His right ear, all the way from the bottom of the left lobe, all the way up to the middle of the ear, his ear got detached," his son Erick Reyna-Gilmore told KTVU.

The suspect reportedly tried to get his own dog the attack the Chihuahua, and when that didn’t happen, the suspect went after the little dog himself. Reyna bent over to scoop up the pup to safety, but then the suspect kicked him and the face and beat him badly. Reyna got out his phone to film the man, but the guy swiped the phone and reportedly took off in the direction of Dolores Park.

A GoFundMe for Reyna’s medical bills describes the suspect as “a suspicious caucasian man with a red plaid shirt, a black dog, and blonde hair.”

If you have any information about the incident, you’re asked to call SFPD at (415) 575-4444. We initially learned the victim goes by the surname “Mrs. Ren,” and SF police now know the identities of all four attackers.

But they can only name one of the alleged attackers, 18-year-old Darryl Moore of Oakland, because the other three alleged attackers are under 18 years old and therefore juveniles. And as the Bay Area News Group reports, one of the accused attackers is only 11 years old.

𝟳𝟬-𝗬/𝗢 𝗠𝗿𝘀.

KPIX has video of Monday's press conference announcing the arrests, seen below. SFPD Chief Bill Scott told those gathered, “The sad part is that we’re here in front of you talking about 14, 13, and 11-year-olds, committing violent robberies.” (Mrs. Ren was reportedly robbed of her iPhone and keys, in addition to the kicks to the head she endured).

Apparently none of the four suspects are San Francisco residents, and most have a previous record. “On August 10, 2022, Milpitas Police Department Officers contacted [the 18-year-old suspect] Moore, the 13-year-old suspect, and the 11-year-old suspect on an unrelated criminal matter and arrested them,” SFPD said in a Monday statement. “The 13-year-old suspect was booked on unrelated charges at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and is being transferred to the custody of Alameda County, who will book them on the warrant in this case.”

In terms of the 11-year-old, SFPD says “The 11-year-old suspect was transferred to the custody of the Alameda County Assessment Center,” and that “Due to their age, the 11-year-old suspect could not be charged in this case.”

The 14-year-old suspect is still at large.
Police say the chapeau crime went down at 12:20 a.m. Friday, near where Great Highway meets Cabrillo Street.

Police say that the victim, a 29-year-old man, was approached by two male suspects who appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s. Somehow, a conflict broke out and "a verbal altercation quickly turned physical," according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Both suspects assaulted the man, police say, continuing to him him even after he fell to the ground.

As the beating concluded, the pair took the victim's hat before "fleeing on their bicycles."

The victim was transported to an area hospital for injuries police say are not life-threatening. The suspects remain on the loose, and police say that no arrests have been made.

A bartender an an upscale Oakland restaurant is behind bars today, after witnesses say they watched him beat a homeless man to death outside his place of business.

The alleged homicide happened outside Flora, which describes itself as "an Art Deco restaurant and bar in downtown Oakland" on its website, at around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

The East Bay Times reports that 42-year-old Cooky York was "panhandling aggressively" outside Flora when he "got into an altercation with a relative" of 29-year-old Oakland resident Juan Espino, a bartender at the restaurant.

When told about the incident, Espino walked out of the restaurant and confronted York, the EBT reports.

Following the verbal confrontation, police told KTVU that Espino "went to an upstairs office and got a baseball bat."

Subsequent surveillance video shows Espino running toward the victim, who is walking away from him, KTVU reports.

According to the Chron, "A witness said he saw the killer run out a nearby bar and club the victim in the head from behind with a baseball bat." According to KTVU, he "came up to the victim from behind and, with two hands, swung the bat, hitting the victim."

Witnesses say Espino then ran back up the street, tossing the bat down an alley adjacent to the bar, the Chron reports. Investigators say that the two men did not know one another prior to the attack.

Witnesses to the attack flagged down a passing patrol car at 4:18, and emergency responders transported York to a hospital, where he later died.

According to the EBT, Espino fled the scene and was later arrested at his Oakland residence "after police identified him through witnesses and physical evidence." He was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder early Monday.

On Wednesday, Espino made his first appearance in court, where he Alameda County prosecutors charged him with murder as well as an enhancement and an enhancement for allegedly using the bat as a deadly weapon, KTVU reports.

Espino's family and friends packedthe courtroom "to support him," the EBT reports. According to KTVU, "One man in the audience raised his arm in the air, but Espino did not appear to respond."

In a written statement, Flora Restaurant says that "Sunday's events are tragic and heartbreaking and will have a lasting effect on much of our staff and community. We send our deepest condolences to the victim's family, and to anyone else who was affected by this horrific tragedy. The world has far too much violence in it."

He is no longer employed by Flora, KTVU reports, and "was not on the clock at the time of the killing."

Espino, who did not enter a plea in Thursday's hearing, is expected to do so during his next court appearance, on November 30. Until then, he remains in custody without bail.

Motorcyclist Beats Man With Helmet, Steals His Phone

An angry motorcyclist remains at large today, after police say he used his helmet to assault a man during a Sunset District dispute.

SF News

attack

beating

crime

motorcyclist

sfpd

Eve Batey

A San Francisco Fire Department Battalion Chief was sentenced to a year of probation this week, after he pleaded "no contest" to charges following a violent physical confrontation with a female co-worker at a popular area restaurant.

Bay City News reports that SFFD Battalion Chief Samuel Romero initially faced domestic violence charges after he reportedly slapped a woman and punched a man while dining at the Original Joe's restaurant in Westlake on February 20.

According to BCN, the confrontation began when the male victim apparently made a comment regarding the difference in age between Romero and the female victim, who is also employed by the SFFD.

The male victim's relationship to Romero is unclear, and the female's under debate: Prosecutors initially claimed that Romero and the woman were a couple, hence the domestic abuse allegation. However, as the case progressed “The victim didn’t want to see it go forward, as is so often the case,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

According to Romero's defense attorney, Julia Jayne, Romero and the female victim were not romantically involved, making the case one of "simple battery, not involving domestic violence,” she said.

“She was not his girlfriend, and that’s why there was no domestic violence plea,” Jayne toldBCN. “They’re firefighters and friends but not in any sort of romantic relationship.”

Friends they might be, but now they are friends with a court order between them: According to BCN, in addition to the probation sentence, Romero got two days of jail time (which he'd already served), $235 in fine, and strict instructions "prohibiting him from harassing the female victim."

It's also unclear if the victim in the battery case is the same woman referred to in a November, 2016 report from KTVU. According to the broadcast station, a female firefighter they name as "Jane" said that when she was transferred to Station two in Chinatown in January of 2016, two male firefighters began harassing her, "hiding her boots before a firehouse inspection, spreading feces on her bathroom floor, and urinating in her bed."

The male firefighters denied the claim, instead telling KTVU that "the charges are ironic, they believe it's 54 year old Battalion Chief Sam Romero, who was stationed at Firehouse 2, who was acting inappropriately by having an affair with Jane, his subordinate."

Following an investigation into the allegations of a relationship between Romero and "Jane," which KTVU documents in detail here, "Romero was reassigned to station 31 in the Richmond permanently, just one neighborhood over from Jane's house."

According to San Francisco's public employee salary information database, Romero's total pay and benefits for the year 2016 was $321,038.97, including a base salary of $182,944.87, overtime of $55,924.52, and "other pay" of $28,097.05. At the time of his March arrangement, BCN reports, Romero remained on active duty with the SFFD. A call from SFist to the SFFD to confirm if that remains the case was not returned as of publication time.

Spitting Suspect Beats Man With Tire Iron In Dogpatch

A man walking in Dogpatch was the victim of an aggravated assault last night, after a suspect spit on him, chased him, and beat him with a tire iron.

SF News

beating

crime

dogpatch

sfpd

tire iron

Eve Batey

A man walking in Dogpatch was the victim of an aggravated assault last night, after a suspect spit on him, chased him, and beat him with a tire iron.

Police say that the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of 20th Street and Third Street.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a male suspect who appeared to be in his 50s first spit on the 35-year-old male victim, then "chased [the victim] for several blocks."

When the suspect caught up to the victim, he hit the younger man with a tire iron, police say.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for injuries police say are not life-threatening. The suspect apparently evaded capture, as according to the SFPD no arrests have been made in the case.

A couple walking near Fisherman's Wharf Thursday morning were the victims of a surprise attack, when a man started beating them with a weapon seemingly without provocation.

Police say that the assault happened at 8:42 Thursday morning, near the heavily-trafficked intersection of Bay and Kearny Streets.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a 45-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were suddenly approached by the 39-year-old male suspect.

"Without reason," police say, the suspect "proceeded to strike them with a weapon causing injury."

That weapon, according to the SFPD, was a "metal pipe," which caused injuries to both victims that were significant enough to require transport to an area hospital for treatment. Both are expected to recover, police say.

Police say that the beating suspect was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail. You likely remember the tale: Back in March of this year, a driver on a San Francisco stretch of 101 was surrounded and attacked by a group of dirt bike riders, apparently because he interrupted their wheelie-popping sideshow. Four months later, the California Highway Patrol says they've nabbed three of the suspects, all of whom are cooling their heels in San Francisco County Jail.

35-year-old Alex Quintana, who would commute to San Francisco from Modesto to drive for ride-hail services Uber and Lyft, says that on the evening of March 8, the bikers shattered his window as he drove on 101 near Cesar Chavez. When he got out of the car to avoid the glass, four to five bikers then began beating him, kicking him when he was down, and ultimately broke one of his legs in three places, and broke his nose and caused nerve damage.

In a press release posted to Facebook Friday, the CHP says that they "simultaneously served multiple arrest and search warrants on four homes in the San Francisco area" on Wednesday morning as a result of their investigation into the case.

Three men, all SF residents, were arrested: 33-year-old Derwayne A. Johnson, 25-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez, and 19-year-old Jarrell E. Williams Jr. "The arrested parties face some to all of the following charges," the CHP writes, "assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault, battery, vandalism, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance."

During the raid (photos and video of which are below) the CHP says they also "recovered several firearms, a stolen dirt bike, money, and a small amount of drugs."

The CHP says that they identified the trio "after an extensive investigation where CHP officers reviewed the videos of this incident taken by passing motorists, obtained positive identifications from CHP and San Francisco Police Department officers who previously had contact with these individuals, and followed up on information provided from the public."

All three of the men have been booked into San Francisco County Jail, police confirm, where they reportedly remain as of Friday afternoon.

As previously reported, 33-year-old Matthew Bate, an analytical chemist visiting SF from Darwin, Australia, was killed in a brawl outside the Da Vinci Villa hotel on Van Ness Avenue at around 2 a.m. on Friday, June 2.

Shortly thereafter, police announced the arrest of 34-year-old Hesperia resident David Murillo in Bate's death by way of "severe head trauma," a San Francisco Police Department press release said at the time.

"Based on information and evidence immediately obtained at the scene, officers located and detained a possible suspect" at the Da Vinci Villa, police said. "At the conclusion of an interview with the detainee, it was determined that [Murillo] was responsible for Bate’s murder."

Murillo, who KRON 4 reports "was in San Francisco for work, installing drapes at the hotel," has no criminal record, San Francisco Public Defender Mark Jacobs says.

In court Tuesday, Jacobs said that “Mr. Murillo had no intention to harm him or kill him, especially to kill him,” the Ex reports. “What happened was horrible for [the victim], but also horrible for Mr. Murillo.”

KRON 4 reports that the confrontation "was among six people (3 vs. 3)." Per the Ex, "the fight began when two groups of men came upon one another near or inside the da Vinci Villa hotel."

Jacobs "could not say who instigated the conflict because he has not yet been given access to the police report," the Chron reports, but tells KRON that the punch that allegedly knocked Bate to the ground and caused him to fatally hit his head "was self-defense" and that Bate "fell awkwardly, and the incident could have happened to anyone."

In fact, Jacobs says that Murillo was "unaware that Bate was gravely injured until police knocked on his door at the Da Vinci Villa and detained him for questioning," according to the Chron.

“He was crying, he was in shock,” Jacobs tells the Chron, “He’s a gentle, hardworking man with two little girls.”

Prosecutors disagree, characterizing the punch as an "unprovoked attack."

“It is our belief that the victim was punched in the head when he didn’t see the punch coming,” a District Attorney's office spokesperson says.

In court Tuesday, the charges against Murillo were reduced to involuntary manslaughter, assault, and battery. He pled not guilty, and is currently being held on $100.000 bail. He is expected return to court for a preliminary hearing next week.
