With corsages, cake, and slow dances to Luther Vandross, it was a night of joy, healing, and new beginnings. — Local News Matters

Saving nature’s soundtrack, one hike at a time

Soundscape engineer Martin Sanchez treks into the Bay Area wilderness to record moments of pure quiet—birdsong, breezes, frogs—before they disappear. You also won't be able to see Nash for a long time. It seems that she is solidly booked until mid-April, touring to Australia, Ireland and then back home to England. After that she's off again, this time on a European tour. She's a very busy girl, indeed. We have a feeling that this show will end up being sold-out just as her New York shows are; buy your tickets now. At $16 bucks, this show is a total bargain. We'd definitely pay more for this popscene's line-up.

Another show this week that is worth checking out is the Boxcar Saints on Tuesday night at Bottom of the Hill. "No Water," their newest album, is currently available for download only on their website and MySpace page. (Why no iTunes or cdbaby.com? Weird.) They are known for their "south-of-the-border rhythms, gypsy howling, and circus-inspired smoky cabaret growling." What a description!

Our friends over at BayBridged are presenting the Audio Out Send, The Lonelyhearts and Leigh Gregory at Hemlock Tavern on Friday night for only $7 bucks. Nice - cheap but great music. Read everything you need to know about this show, here.

One of the few remaining knife sharpeners left in SF these days, this is a must-listen. Why? Because it's important to get your knives sharpened. (America's Test Kitchen can't stress it enough!) But Jivano sharpens more than haughty Sur La Table cutlery. Take a listen.

We're pretty big fans of As Tall As Lions' self-titled debut record, but we haven't had a chance to see them live yet, unless that performance we watched on Jimmy Kimmel counts. The groupmind of active SFist participants really makes for some excellent reading, whether it's about bumblebees, celebrity gossip, Muni issues, or politics.

We thought it was high time to highlight efforts, folks.

Every week, we'll be sifting through all the comments and picking five to spotlight on a new weekend feature: The SFist Top 5 Comments Of The Week Audio Podcast. We'll introduce the context of the comment, read the comment, and tell you why we thought it raised the discussion (or made us laugh).

For instance, last week we rather enjoyed Amy, BML, a certain Mr. Daly's self-defense, and we're always psyched when Jamison drops some knowledge. Hopefully this one will prove a little more satisfying than that poetry thing last week. Here we go...

-MW

Stuff you can order? "How to maintain?" How about a Strunk & White's? Otherwise, did you catch that thing about the almighty It's-It? That's a pretty good orderable thing to bring back fond memories of the City by the Bay. And speaking of which, how about going to your local used record store and buying some Journey vinyl? Ohh-oooowohhhh-ooh-woh-oh-oh? Does that do it for you? Are you more of a traditionalist? Get some Tony Bennett while you're there.

The best thing we can think of is a subscription to Major League Baseball's Game Day Audio so you can listen to Giants broadcasts online. It's the first thing we'd do if we had to leave town. It's only fifteen bucks a season and you get your fill of Jon and Dave and Kruk and Kuip for six (or, if things go really well, seven) months. Another good thing might be some coffee from Caffe Trieste--we hope your sound was turned on when you hit that link--which is easily obtained online. That always seems like the quintessential San Francisco cafe to us.

But what else? Do three things a care package make? We thought we should seek help on this question, so we invited other SFist writers to give their suggestions as well.
How to maintain my San Francisco love from far away? Can you suggest a care package of good SF stuff I can order to renew my affection for a city I haven't seen in some time?
