SFist Fibs: Another American Apparel Post

What with Bush out of office, American Apparel has, unfortunately, turned into a lightening rod for San Francisco's wrath.

And who are we to argue with traffic gold?

That said, American Apparel's "Legalize Gay" shirt has us furrowing our brows like never before. While AA pockets all of the money that it's making off of the passage of Prop 8, Urban Outfitters donates one hundred percent of its "Marriage Equality" t-shirt sales to EQCA and NCLR (two of the organizations leading the Supreme Court challenge).

This is particularly remarkable as Urban Outfitters has a super-conservative chairman, and only two months ago yanked a pro-gay-marriage t-shirt from shelves. Their explanation at the time was that the shirt wasn't selling well (which is at least plausible, since it wasn't a very pretty shirt). Hopefully this design will enjoy better sales.

All your tshirt are belong to us.

What is this Fuckedcompany circa 2001? Are you the Bayarian? What happened to that guy? I miss his yarns about buttery Chardonnay.

Because the value of open and free discussion of controversial subjects would be furthered if only non-profit speech is encouraged? But I agree, props to Urban Outfitters.

AA should be crying that UO is considered a 'better' company than them right now. UO is notorious for stealing independent artist's designs and artwork and uses sweat shops and small children for their labor. What good is your sweat shop free manufacturing if you're not donating to a cause you're advertising to fight for.

American Apparel doesn't "pocket" the money from the sales of our "Legalize Gay, Repeal Prop 8" t-shirts. These were originally printed up to give out to protesters at rallies and marches after the passage of Proposition 8 last November. The response was so overwhelming that we had more made and distributed them to all the American Apparel stores and put them up online.

In case anyone is curious about our position on gay rights and homosexuality in general, we just wanted you to know that:

-Dozens of our employees have been on the front lines of the protests in Los Angeles handing out hundreds and hundreds of Legalize Gay t-shirts to supporters
-We have donated over $17,000 of t-shirts to protesters, the Harvey Milk High School in New York City, and local gay businesses.
-We plan on donating at least 1,000 more of these t-shirts to other organizations that support marriage equality.
-We stood up to the people who wanted us to stop carrying Butt Magazine and will continue to support it because its the right thing to do
-Many of our employees are gay, lesbian and transgendered.
-We're currently discussing potential projects with GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco

It's great that Urban Outfitters is doing what they're doing but we know where we stand on this and are sincere about it.

Truly, a Rosa Parks for our time.
