The wayfinding problem has already been solved. The system used by BVG in Berlin is by far the best and has been adopted by many other systems, Chicago in particular.

Why change? The existing 70s-ish design reflects the system's 70s-ish technology, and I kind of like the Star-Trekky typography used to number the cars and stuff.
