Political Junkie: Gav Gets Mad
As we've mentioned, better watch this clip (or upload it to YouTube) before ABC 7 takes it down -- media hound Dan Noyes from the "I Team" (we think the I stands for "investigation") works his magic on Gavin Newsom yet again!
The interview is ostensibly about the Yale a capella singer situation, but the fun really starts around 3:30, when Dan asks Gavin to comment about the stories going around town about his excessive drinking, and then Gav's all like, "This interview is over," but then inexplicably continues to talk (and talk and talk and talk) for about a minute more before finally storming off into his limo and slamming the door. Just GO, Gavin! By the end, we were kind of hoping he'd get on his cell phone and call for his boys to come in 20 deep.
The transcript of the whole interview is up here too. Oh, Gavin, you didn't accidentally call Kimberly Guilfoyle your wife, did you? Tragic. (Also, we liked Gavin's exhortation "to remind our parents to be good stewards of underage drinking." Will you be giving Mr. and Mrs. Mountz a call next?)

Signs that you might have a drinking problem:
1) Denial
2) Anger
3) Alcohol is impairing your work
4) Alcohol is impairing your social life
5) These are recurring problems
Gav baby, get help!
This is news? yawn...
(god, I can't believe I'm about to defend Gavin...uhnngg)Good for Newsom.
The reporter baits him with the Yale story and then hits him with a question about his drinking? Total slimeball move..I'm glad the mayor trashed him the whole way down to the car.
If this had been Willie he would have just chuckled. Experience counts, I suppose.
I'm not sure what Gavin's problem is, but he looks like hell.
I'm going to have to agree with ML. While I do agree that a "chuckle" would have gotten the point across more effectively and show more maturity and experience, I can totally see where Gavin is coming from. Even I had to cringe a bit when I watched the last bit of the interview. We've all got our issues with certain individuals in politics, but the old bait and switch was a tacky move.
I think Gavin needs to stop taking everything to heart though and just let people do what they do. You can't change people, so best to just focus on getting the job done, even if it means having to sit down and communicate with people you don't quite like.
Seriously, I don't understand why attacking the mayor is what news reporters think their job is. Or why folks are acting it's the run up to prohibition and everyone who drinks has "a problem."
I agree with ML and mkay. When I watching this clip I could only think of what scum Noyes is, not that Newsom has a problem (beyond trying to humor such reporters). Investigative journalism doesn't mean getting in someone's face and bait-and-switching them until they start cursing or walk away. Noyes is trying to make a scandal where there isn't one, instead of focusing on the story of the Yale singers. No wonder I don't usually watch ABC7's news programs.
First of all I find Sfist pathetic you guys got nothing better to do than pick on Gavin, you are nothing but a bunch of haters and losers. Also when did attacking the mayor become news could it be that Dan Noyes has nothing elese better to do. He was hired to investigate and to bring to the public important news that we should know, not to go around and mess with the mayor. Could it be that Dan is jealous because Gavin is good looking, intelligent, and caring.I was raised anytime that someone spends that much time hating on you, you should take it as a compliment. So Gavin take SFist and Dan Noyes picking on you as a compliment.Since they have nothing else better to do than spend it wishing they were you.
I'm seriously waiting for when Fox News is going to sign Dan Noyes. What kind of "journalist" put's 'uh's & um's' and a transcript of an interview? This so called professional needs the boot!
I know. Coke makes me run at the mouth, too.
I'd gladly have a couple drinks with Biggie G. Hell, I'd even share my bag with him.
Only Mr. Newsom is in control of his responses. Or, in this case, not in control. A simple "no comment" from the Mayor would have sufficed. Or perhaps even better, "Dan that's not news. I was drinking at a party and walked into a very emotional scene". Instead he went bonkers after being asked about a week old newspaper story. Why so defensive? Why so emotional? How will Mr. Newsom react to a true crisis? Is he even-keeled enough to run the city?

Bait and switch? Are you kidding me? The reporter simply asked him to comment on a previous story about his drinking. He could have viewed this as a perfect opportunity to comment/respond, instead he throws a temper tantrum. I guess that question wasn't in his script for the day so he was unprepared and defensive.
It was downright embarrassing if you ask me, the whole thing. His answers about the Yale story were pathetic. Shit, he was probably a little tipsy during the first part of the interview which is why he got so defensive. Maybe Dan could smell the booze on his breath, even though he kept looking at his shoes. Someday we'll be able to smell that on YouTube, but for now...
i called Dan and asked him what that was all about and Dan told me that the Mayor smelled like he had just took a drink.
Very Tom Cruise-ish.
I'm shocked that Gavin's handlers clearly hadn't prepared him for the inevitable question about his recent heavy drinking. How did they not see this coming? He should have been prepared and should have handled it with a cool head. Instead he embarrassed himself and defintely gave the story of his drinking more legs.
That was an absolutely mockery of an interview and the interviewer should be ashamed and embarrassed. He states that he brought it up because it was a story...?
It was not a story… it was a perception with a conclusionary opinion from journalist who need to make something out of nothing in order to keep their job.
If the media wants to make Gavin out to be an alcoholic then they might as well do story on the rest of us who are single professionals in the city…and for that matter anyone who has a social life…..
The PROBLEM with this that is disturbing is AMERICAN is the journalism...GET A LIFE you are all so behind the times! This would never even be a story in Europe or any other place … let freedom ring.
