An allegedly stolen vehicle that San Francisco police spotted and tried to pull over in SoMa Wednesday evening ended up being at the center of a chase that ended on the Bay Bridge.
The incident began with an attempted traffic stop near Mission and Eighth streets in San Francisco around 6:42 pm, as the Chronicle reports. The driver of the vehicle, which SFPD officers identified as stolen, took off and led officers on a chase, which continued onto the Bay Bridge amid rush-hour traffic.
The traffic might have been key to the ultimate arrest, as the male suspect ended up stopping the car on the middle of the bridge and climbing out onto the bridge structure in an act of desperation.
As KRON4 reports, police, with the help of CHP, were able to make an arrest.
"At this time, the suspect and the charges are not being released due to the active investigation," the SFPD said in a statement.
Motorists trying to cross the bridge toward the East Bay Wednesday night around 7 pm likely encountered the resulting traffic from the police activity.
While an arrest has been made, this is still an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444, or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.” Tipsters can remain anonymous.
