A big rig carrying a load of Tesla batteries went off the freeway and overturned, and now westbound I-80 is seeing some significant delays near Truckee.
The accident happened Monday morning around 7 am near Hirschdale Road, not far from the California-Nevada border. According to CHP, the big rig "pulled over… on its side" along westbound I-80.
"Thankfully no injuries, but cleanup’s gonna take a while," the CHP's Facebook post says. "Those Tesla batteries aren’t something you just sweep up and call it a day. Expect delays, have patience, and maybe use this time to practice your best zen breathing."
Google Maps is showing several miles of westbound I-80 still moving slowly as 12:20 pm Monday, from just past the state line, between Mystic and Hinton. And a delay notice posted near Floriston says, "Delays up to 57 minutes."
The crash is reminiscent of one that occurred almost exactly a year ago, when a Tesla electric semi truck crashed on I-80 a few miles further west, near Emigrant Gap, leading to a lengthy battery fire.
Luckily, in this case, there was no fire.
