Starting today, if you have some spare time, and the Star Wars app on your phone, you can hold it up to take a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge and see a Star Destroyer hovering over it and Tie Fighters flying by. The augmented reality (AR) experience is part of Force Friday II weekend, a big retail launch from LucasFilm and Disney that you can learn more about in the video below (the AR stuff happens in Disney stores apparently too).
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the app lets you see Tie Fighters and Star Destroyers at 20 different landmarks worldwide, including the Hollywood sign in LA, Central Park, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the Eiffel Tower.
"This Force Friday II weekend, we're inviting fans and families to join the Resistance and help 'Find the Force' in our global augmented reality treasure hunt taking place across more than 20,000 retail locations. We're kicking the event off with an extra AR surprise for anyone near 20 of the world's most iconic destinations," says Paul Southern, Senior Vice President, Global Licensing at Lucasfilm, via ABC News.
The AR fun only lasts from today through Sunday.
In the app there's also a contest to win tickets to the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which comes out in December, and fans are being asked to photograph and post their AR shots using the hashtags #FindTheForce and #Sweepstakes for a chance to win.
For those trying to do this around Crissy Field, look out for residual dog poop.
Also, Disney asks that you do not use the app while driving, or crossing the street.
