Another one bites the dust, my friends. It's been widely acknowledged that too many cafés and coffee venues had opened in the Castro in the last few years, and the great shakeout continues this week with the closure of the illy Caffè on Market Street. Hoodline confirms the news with the company, which issued a PR response encouraging everyone to visit their other lowercase illy Caffè locations at 123 Battery Street, 2055 Union Street, and the newest one at 90 New Montgomery.

The plan is to close the Castro shop as of this Friday, June 30.

In their statement, illy's rep said, "While it was a fantastic location, the foot traffic throughout the week did not support the ongoing operations."

While Artis gave up quickly on their Castro location last year, and the small Wildcraft espresso bar (a half block down from illy) closed a few months back, two other coffee spots have moved into the 'hood since then. Verve opened their location at Church and Market this past winter, and Ritual just opened a new location in the space Wildcraft was in.

And did I mention that there's also Weaver's Coffee on the brief walk between illy and Ritual? And that Peet's is on the next block on the way to Verve?

Anyway, there remain about a dozen places to buy coffee and/or sit down and enjoy your coffee all within about six blocks, just one fewer now than there were.
