Having made a name for himself as a chef at the tiny and much loved Canteen, Dennis Leary has spent the last few years as more of a businessman and bar owner. He's got a cafe, sandwich shop, and bakery/cafe all serving the FiDi environs (Cafe Terminus, Sentinel, and Golden West), and several popular bars (House of Shields, Natoma Cabana, Rx) in his current empire, and you can add to that one more: Tequila Mockingbird, which just debuted over the weekend in the former Dada Bar space at 86 Second Street.

Using some of his trademark wit (he was an English major before he became a chef), Leary has installed a "door to nowhere" in the middle of the bar, complete with welcome mat. And as Eater reports, he salvaged some of the other decor, including a neon "Private" sign over the mezzanine-level booth, from a defunct porn store in Los Angeles.

He's also added a new, narrower solid mahogany bar, and some may recall that Dada's looked like this.

The menu includes nine house cocktails, all made with either tequila or mezcal — though there is one that's gin-based, called Bathtub Gin, with mezcal and amaro added — and 13 beers on tap, along with a cider. And there's the Tequila Mockingbird cocktail itself, which is a riff on the Tequila Sunrise but with blanco tequila, curacao, grapefruit, and lime.

The place is well located to be a happy hour destination for the Transbay District as a whole, and it's just around the corner from Natoma Cabana, so Leary already knows his audience.

Tequila Mockingbird - 86 Second Street - Open Monday to Saturday, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
