People celebrating New Year's Eve in San Francisco have even fewer excuses than usual to drive drunk Saturday, as bountiful options are available to shuttle partiers safely back home.

According to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, all Muni routes and lines — yes, that includes the ordinarily $7/one way cable cars — will be free to ride from 8 p.m. on December 31 until 5 a.m. on January 1.

Caltrain's also free to ride that night, with the gratis shuttles beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday and running all the way to 2:15 Sunday morning.

Perennially cash-strapped BART won't be offering free (well, legitimately free, at least) rides, but they will be running later than their usual midnight endpoint. According to the transit agency, trains will run until 3 a.m., and they'll be stacking extra trains at SF stations to manage the crowds heading home after the midnight fireworks display at the Embarcadero.

Finally, drivers who realize too late that they've had too much can still travel with their precious vehicle, as AAA will be again offering their charmingly-named Tipsy Tow service. From 8 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, drivers (you don't have to be in AAA) can call (800) 222-4357 (that's 800- AAA-HELP) for a free one-way tow and ride of up to 10 miles to the driver's home. Additional passengers are allowed if there's room in the tow truck but, no, you can't get towed to another party or bar, just home for a big glass of water, ibuprofen, and bed, drunkie.
