New Castro spot Nomica (2223 Market Street), which I gathered last week was getting very close to opening, has been open for private test dinners the last couple of nights, and could possibly be softly open to the public as of this weekend, with the goal of being officially open next week — just in time for the Burning Man exodus.

Online reservations aren't yet available, but you can try to get one by calling 415-655-3280 — no one was answering the line as of press time, however.

Chef Hiroo Nagahara's "drinking house" spinoff of Sausalito's acclaimed Sushi Ran has but one sashimi dish on the menu — a seasonal, chef's selection for $25 — and, indeed, no sushi, as promised. Instead, Nagahara is focusing on versions of homestyle dishes from his youth, including fried chicken karaage with bearnaise aioli; braised tuna cheeks with umeboshi; and gyoza-stuffed chicken wings. Entré items top out with a toasted koji aged black angus steak for $50; Dungeness crab donabe rice with crab miso for $70 (or $35 for a half portion); and a whole chicken cooked in brioche and served with shiso chimichurri and miso butter for $100, for which the kitchen asks 24 hours advance notice.

The space, formerly home to Pesce and Jake's on Market after being the longtime home of 2223, has gotten a Japanese-style makeover with a wood-slate dropped ceiling over the dining room made of cypress and cedar, all at the hands of Cass Calder Smith Architecture. The bar remains in place along the left wall, and will be serving a full bar including American and Japanese whiskey, and cocktails made with Awamori, a distilled rice spirit from Okinawa.

Below, the full food menu as of this week, which is subject to change.
