Another close encounter with whales this week as we get video of what appears to be a trio of humpbacks feeding very near the shoreline at Linda Mar Beach. Skyler Thomas shared video of the whales from the weekend with CBS 5, and the station returned to the beach on Tuesday where the whales were still breaching and feeding in about the same spot.

They also quote frequent Pacifica surfer Jasper Vanvliet saying, "You see animals all the time, pretty much every time you go out. But whales that close is really freaking rare!"

This follows on weeks of multiple sightings this spring of humpback whales inside the Golden Gate, where they also rarely venture. The theory is that an abundance of anchovies and krill have clustered in places that they don't normally exist, attracting the massive creatures as they make their migration up the Pacific coast to Alaska.
