At the Greek Theatre Friday night, Paul Simon paused during verses of "The Boxer" to deliver the news. Muhammad Ali had died. This is at 3:50 in the above video.
As Rolling Stone observes, Simon was one of a great many musicians to pay tribute to Ali, but with the lyrics to the boxer, his might have been a defining one. Recall:
In the clearing stands a boxer,
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
And cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame,
"I am leaving, I am leaving."
But the fighter still remains
Ali wasn't the only figure from the world of athletics to get recognition at the Simon concert. The arrival of Warriors coach Steve Kerr caused quite a stir, interrupting the show.
If it was initially unclear whether Simon knew of Kerr and his position, the singer put that quickly to rest. Here's what Simon said:
Steve Kerr walked into the Greek to cheers. Paul Simon said the next time Curry sets up for a 3 he's walking out there on the court. ;)— CocktailGen (@AeroGenevieve) June 4, 2016
