A month after a well-known North Beach artist was the victim of a fatal attack at a Market Street Muni stop, the San Francisco Police Department has released video footage of his alleged assailant, in the hopes that the public might help them track the man down.
As previously reported, 74-year-old Stuart "Stu" Jackson was standing at a bus stop at Van Ness Avenue and Market Street at 2 p.m. on December 5, when "the suspect approached him and without provocation began to assault" him, a press release from SFPD reads.
During the assault, Jackson, who was on his way to a street fair when the assault occurred, "fell and struck his head on the cement," police say. According to his brother, Jackson "was hit so hard that it crushed his skull."
Jackson was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, but was unable to recover and on December 12 was removed from life support. He died shortly thereafter.
A regular at North Beach haunts like Caffe Trieste, Stella Pastry and Vesuvio, Jackson was known for drawing portraits of other patrons then offering them for sale to the unwitting models, generally to to their delight, Hoodline reported in December.
“He was kind of a unique, local character and a lot of people were familiar with him,” Marc Dierkes, a friend of Jackson’s, told the Chron.
“I’m still sorting through it.”
"I'm still in shock over Stuart's death. Everybody I talk to, we're just sickened about what happened to him," friend Richard Weinberger told ABC7.
The suspect, as you can see in the video, is a 25-35-year-old male who police say is "black, mixed race or Hispanic." He stands about 6 feet tall and has a muscular build.
