Two people were killed in a car crash on Highway 1 in Pacifica early Friday morning, one of whom was an Uber passenger.
KRON 4 reports an Uber driver was heading northbound on Highway 1 in Nissan Maxima when a wrong-way driver in a Toyota Corolla going southbound struck the Nissan head-on around 2:30 a.m Christmas morning.
CHP said the crash killed 25-year-old Jason Gilbride, of Pacifica, the passenger riding in the Uber. According to the Chronicle, he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the Corolla, who has not been identified, also died. ABC 7 reports the Toyota caught fire, and the driver was burned beyond recognition. The driver of the Uber was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where they are in serious condition.
In a statement, an Uber spokesperson wrote, "We are deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy. This Christmas Day, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and with the injured driver and his loved ones."
No word on whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
