"Better. Faster. Cleaner." That's the way of Washio, the Uber of someone else doing your laundry.
But in a hastily deleted tweet from one prominent San Francisco tech executive, Washio appears to be making a hard pivot into new territory: The on-demand condom delivery space.
Update: However, Washio cofounder and COO Juan Dulanto tells SFist that what appears to be a love glove is just a regular one.
"If you zoom into the photo and look at the width of the base, and use a little judgment, you'll see that it's a glove," Dulanto says, noting that Washio uses plastic gloves in their process. "The customer jumped the gun," said Dulanto, and with it, SFist may have also been premature.
The mildly displeased Washio customer and recent dad is Zach Klein, a cofounder of Vimeo, the editor of Cabin Porn — which is not actually pornographic — as well as the CEO of the company DIY.
SFist reached out to Klein for comment and clarification. "It could be a glove!" Klein writes, though he didn't state a reason for deleting the tweet.
"I didn't pull it apart or inspect it carefully, for obvious reasons, and just took it directly to my building's dumpster. I'm unable to confirm whether it's a glove or condom now." Either way, it sounds like that thing is safe in the trash.
Los Angeles based Washio holds a reported $16.8 million in funding, but it remains to be seen how much they'll invest in delivering prophylactics. Right now, the company is busy disrupting the laundromat, according to one silly tweet that website Mic. characterized as indicative of a cruel and destructive Silicon Valley ethos. Yeah, that exaggeration — take a look at the url for full effect — is a little extreme, but here's that tweet nonetheless.
