Though there was a protest Wednesday night in downtown Oakland to protest Mayor Libby Schaaf's new strictures on nighttime protests, the Oakland police, perhaps wisely, just decided to pretend it wasn't happening. The latest action, which echoes one that was similarly sort of lackluster on Friday despite some buildup in press, was organized in part by activist Cat Brooks, who was one of several people who sat down last week with Schaaf and the police to voice their frustration over efforts to tamp down nighttime protests and curb the type of vandalism that occurred following protests on May Day. And when law enforcement failed to appear last night, Brooks declared victory, as the Chronicle reports, saying, "Congratulations Oakland. We beat back this beast."
But, as the Chron also reports, the protest fizzled pretty fast, before 9:30 p.m., perhaps for lack of any challenge posed by police. And despite trying to spread word of the demonstration with the hashtag #BreakTheCurfew, there isn't actually any official curfew in place.
Friday's protest, which drew only about 60 people according to the Chron, failed to gather much steam.
Under Schaaf's "new approach" to dealing with demonstrations, demonstrators are to be cited for unlawful assembly after dark and/or corralled onto sidewalks when they move into the street. Schaaf earlier told the East Bay Express, "Our intent is that by using better crowd management, not control, but management, that we can get demonstrators into safe spaces after sunset, once it’s dark, and this will better protect everyone’s safety, freedom of speech, and assembly."
Brooks said there would be another demonstration this Friday, this time to protest the police shooting of Demouria Hogg, who was killed last Saturday morning after being found in his BMW near Lake Merritt, passed out. Police say he had a weapon on the seat beside him, was initially unresponsive, and when police tried to wake him, he allegedly reached for his weapon, and he was shot by a young female officer. The shooting is under investigation.
