The first Bay Area-located episode of The Mindy Project aired last week, but last night was the first one in actual SF, titled "San Francisco Bae," and in it Mindy Kaling's character reconnects with an old college flame, Alex nee Xander Eakin who was the man who took her virginity back in 2004. She meets him in a San Francisco bar, where a bartender rudely serves him before serving her (sounds about right, especially if he was hot and the bartender was gay, but I digress). Alex is now a startup billionaire, and credits Mindy with getting him to chop off an ugly ponytail he had ten years back.
Mindy has started a three-month fellowship at Stanford and therefore temporarily relocated across the country, as the Season 3 plot goes, leaving behind boyfriend Danny (Chris Messina) in New York, though the two are keeping things going via phone.
Alex introduces a temptation, but he turns out to be a little tech-douchey ("BitCoin for your thoughts!") and has an aggressive girlfriend already, and Mindy would rather run home to call Danny anyway.
Bonus: In this fictional SF, tech billionaires have their own secret Hunger Games.
Added bonus: They used the exterior of Twin Peaks Tavern in the Castro for an establishing shot, redubbing it The Foggy Glass.
We know that Danny must be arriving in SF to tour some sites with Mindy in one of the upcoming episodes, because of this photo from November. But so far she's on her own.
