What is going on at the Outer Sunset's premiere destination restaurant? Less than six months after Outerlands parted ways with Brett Cooper the chef who arguably put the restaurant on the foodinista map for reasons other than brunch the restaurant announced today that his replacement, Greg Kuzia-Carmel, is also gone. Spin it as they may (both parties told Inside Scoop that "the fit wasn’t right") this second bit of chef drama is a little startling.
The switch-up happens just four months after the restaurant reopened with its expanded dining room, following a five-month construction hiatus. And now that the restaurant is basically a 7-day-a-week, all-day type restaurant, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, owner Dave Muller says it no longer makes sense "to have one person umbrella the whole thing."
So, the current solution is going to be to promote pastry chef Brooke Mosley and longtime sous chef Bayani Inclano into larger roles as co-chefs, as well as to hire more chefs to make things even more collaborative.
Fans of the recent menu, or of Cooper's former style, will have to wait and see what this means for the future of Outerlands dining. For now, they say, the place will continue on the same "stylistic route" that it's always had.
Kuzia-Carmel has no immediate plans for a new gig, though he just relocated here from some fancy spots in New York. And, meanwhile, Cooper is getting set to open his own spot under the Daniel Patterson umbrella in The Beast & the Hare space at Guerrero and 22nd.
