Stories started surfacing last year about increased cases of marijuana poisoning in dogs and the problem is apparently getting worse.

CBS reports that Bay Area clinics are seeing more dogs in their emergency rooms after they consumed cannabis or edibles, which are found anywhere from their owner’s stash to trash cans. Even bong water can be a source of poisoning.

The San Francisco SPCA’s Dr. Jennifer Scarlett says: “This trend is being observed in multiple places in the Bay Area. One clinic is reporting that they’re seeing one to two cases a week.”

As previously reported by SFist via the Chronicle, the national Pet Poison Control Hotline has seen a 200% increase in marijuana poison cases over the past five years.

Symptoms of marijuana toxicity in dogs include listlessness, trembling, vomiting, and trouble walking. Scarlett says if you think your dog has ingested pot, immediately call your vet. Dogs are usually put on fluid support to help detoxify their system.

These cases are rarely fatal, but can result in a costly vet bill. Be smart and keep your pot out of your puppies’ reach!
