A shooting with an unknown motive (possibly road rage) prompted the CHP to shut down the westbound I-580 freeway at around 4:45 p.m. Thursday, putting traffic at a standstill near Castro Valley for about an hour.

The incident appears to have occurred around 4 p.m. and involved shots fired from the passenger side of a silver Ford Focus at an early-model SUV containing one adult. At least seven bullets appear to have hit the car and windshield, though a witness says at least 10 shots were fired. No one was injured.

Police closed the freeway in order to investigate the incident, search for bullet casings, and talk to the driver of the car. This happened just past the 238 interchange, and thus only affected those drivers trapped past the bend in the freeway, allowing others to escape to an alternate route as the backup stretched on. However, traffic still backed up for miles, and multiple drivers in the standstill just got out of their cars to figure out what was going on.

The driver of the SUV, Jake Detro, spoke to ABC 7 about the incident. It appears he did not know the people in the car, and he was just on his way home from work in Dublin at the time of the shooting. He was wearing a cowboy hat at the time, and he says, "They hit my hat."

Cowboy/good ol' boy hate crime, anyone?

Tipsters are encouraged to call the CHP at (510) 581-9028.
