With that in mind, we must point you to this marvelous roundup of summer jams from 20 years ago, and at the risk of dating ourselves, we need to say it was a great summer for pop music, when "alternative" had just come into its own, and R&B was evolving away from the oftimes hideous '80s. Janet Jackson's first single off her fifth studio album Janet, the followup to her number-one 1989 hit record Rhythm Nation 1814, sounds like pure summer to us, and like kicking back in the sun with a refreshing beverage in hand.
