Mission Street nightclub mogul Gus Murad is expanding in to the marijuana game, apparently. As the Examiner reported over the weekend, the Morado Collective (of which Murad is a partner) recently put in the paperwork to open up a medical cannabis dispensary as part of a respite care complex aimed at the gay Hispanic community.
While the pharmacy still has to go through the necessary red tape to open a new dispensary, which could take another year or so to work through, Morado Collective operator Eduardo Morales told the Examiner that his group has plans to be more than just some place to buy weed. In addition to selling compassionate care medicine, the collective also hopes to offer a place for patients to stay overnight — most likely in the Elements Hostel that currently shares the building with Medjool's nightclub and controversial roof deck. If that idea is conjuring up images of a seedy marijuana den at 21st and Mission, you'll want to stop yourself right there: "It wouldn’t be like some place in Amsterdam to go and buy marijuana," Morales explained.
The dispensary, which was apparently Murad's idea and is so far relying on his funding to get off the ground, also has a unique focus of giving back to the community. According to Morales, the dispensary will be donating its profits to nonprofit groups like the LGBT Center and AGUILAS, a group that provides HIV/AIDS prevention services to the gay latino community. (Morales is also Executive Director of AGUILAS.)
Meanwhile, next door at Medjool, the downstairs dining room remains closed while the folks behind Berretta and Starbelly work out a new concept for the space. And just down the street, Murad will soon become the landlord for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
