In frozen dessert news, there's a "1930's-inspired ice cream and artisanal soda shop" cleverly called Ice Cream Bar, opening in Cole Valley around the end of January. Judging from Eater's preview of the place, Ice Cream Bar will hit all the right buzzword buttons by harking back to a simpler time when booze was illegal, sodas were medicinal and milkshakes weren't just made by throwing ice cream in a blender.
On board to mix up the sodas using "interesting tinctures and syrups" is barman Russell Davis, who used to pour drinks on the other side of this pretend prohibition at FiDi watering hole Rickhouse. Of course, the sodas will be season appropriate, except for the homemade cola and root beer which should be available year-round. Owner Juliet Pries tells Eater there will be a dozen or so ice cream flavors on hand and "sustainably sourced" (but of course) hot dogs and grilled cheeses will be served. Look for Ice Cream Bar to swing open the art deco doors around January 21st. Prohibition is officially expected to end at the bar's location on Cole Street at Frederick a few weeks later when they officially get their beer and wine license.
